I'm still here, just been a little busy lately. I'm not planning on being in a hurry, so I'll save the money to get the roller set up.
My heads are the peanut ports so I'll probably plan on a good set of GM R-ports or aluminum.
I'm planning on putting this mill in a 1972 Corvette, any tough spots to keep in mind. I'm looking for a good 500 streeteble horses, not a full on race motor.
can I get away with a good set of oval ports and still get enough flow to feed 500-535 cid and make around 500 hp.
I really am learning a lot, thanks for all of your input.
BTW This is a new one piece mark 5 block.
Dusty, good to see you're back. Well, you should have absolutely no problem reaching your goals. 500 HP on that setup will be cake. Yes, ditch the peanut ports, they are no good. And, I dont know how much flow your 535 will need, airwise, but I cant imagine a set of large oval ports would not work fine. The guys I mentioned before are all running that many cubes, but they are close...and they're making much more than 500 HP with oval port heads. So I know it can be done. Yes, a good set of aftermarket heads would be the best, but if you're on a budget, you can always upgrade later. Im sure Pat and Eric will offer more info. Knowing that I think I'll probably just keep the stock bore. It is a brand new block, I may as well save the money on machine work and leave the bores alone. The stock bore of 4.25" with a 4.5" stroke will give me 510.7 cid.
The bones I save on skipping the overbore will go a long way toward heads and rollers.
When I was in high school I took a 351 Windsor out of a 71' mercury montego and put it in a 1985 ford ranger with a narrowed 8 3/4 inch rear from a 1965 Coronet.

Instead of fabricating a set of headers from scratch, could I take a set of standard headers and cut the primary tubes and add an inch or so to get the extra heighth.
What cfm will it take to feed this beast. I asked about the manifold spacers because eventually I want to get a Barry Grant Six Shooter Tri-Power intake they come with 3-250cfm deuces. Will 750cfm do it? that is the very long term plan because they ring out at about $2,400 for the carbs and intake.

To get 500 hp out of 510 cubes this can be done with 781 heads with 2.19,1.88 valves plenty of port work,bowls blended gasket match etc,you will need 9.1 comp. ratio a cam with around 245 to 250 at .050 on the intake 250 to 255 on the exhaust side,.575 lift both sides. A large hyd. will work.Good intake,good ignition.This is a good guess of what I think it takes to get 500 hp.Anyone else have ideas?Quote:
