I have a 72 mark 4 in my Nova . The starter is giving me some problem's . It has a tendency to grind the flywheel on occasion . It is very annoying!The starter bolts are in line with gear . I want to install a new light-weight high-torque starter . The flywheel is 14" 168 tooth and the block looks like it has threads for the new one . Just wanted someone to reassure me everything will work o.k. before I throw down the cash for the new piece.thanks:cool:

Took the starter off today , the teeth were a little chewed up . The flywheel looks o.k. ,cleaned up the threads in the bottom of the block for the new high torque unit . thanks for trying to help, but the old starter has 3 bolts in it facing the front , there is no way to shim it.

is the stater bolts in the block or bell housing? if the bolts are in the block then erik is right. the shims will move the starter down.

The 3 bolts that mount the old starter are in the bellhousing. It also has a half moon lip that the end of the starter goes through. I hope that it does not interfere with the new high torque unit . Is anyone familiar with this particular bellhousing.
I had a 69 chevy p/u with that type bell housing and starter but it was on a small block. I don't recall if a block mounted starter will work with that bell housing. Best bet buy one and see. if it doden't fit just return it and get a new one for the bell housing.
A '72 Chevelle would use the starter with 2 vertical bolts into the block. The bellhousing with 3 bolts is probably a cast one from the early '60's . I have been known to cut a hole in that type bell to fit a newer starter, but its much easier to just find a newer one. A plus is, they're aluminum.
i think you need the bell housing type starter. i guess it depends on the flywheel you are using.
If this only happens on occasion as you say, I suspect that you have a bad spot or two on the flywheel.
