Pro-Action 360 cc??

I am new here and would like to get off on the right foot. I am looking to build or buy a big block for my 1972 chevy pickup. It will mot be used for daily driver duties, it is to be used to drive occasionally and to head to the track when I have the time.

Any suggestions are welcome. Right now I have an opportunity to pick up a set of Pro-Action 360 heads at a good price. I have a feeling that these are to big to run on a street truck but would like some input if anyone has any. I realize there are probably as good if not better heads out there but as I said these are a very good buy from a friend's friend. If it is just a matter of getting the combo right to run under these I would be up for any suggestions on the short block or induction.

I.M.O.,these heads are great in the 540 -572 cube area.
With over 7,000 rpms.

Not made any decisions yet but am probably leaning towards a few more cubes than that.

Looking for a street bruiser with occasional track use, maybe in the neighborhood of 600-650 horse IF I can get it. The numbers doesn't matter as much as the performance of the truck. Since it will probably be a stick truck I thought I could get away with a little more motor.

to big for any thing but a 540-572 that head in a truck would not be my first pick. truck would have to be 2800 pounds and go it past7800 rpms and it would not do any thing be low 4500 rpms less you put a very big blower on it

Thankyou Pat, any suggestions to get me where I want with the truck.

I have looked at crate engines ranging from GM performance parts to World products. Is there a good engine out there for the price to do what I would like or should I piece one together.

From searching this area of the forum, you seem to be the authority on big blocks, thankyou for taking the time to respond. If you have any suggestions I am willing to listen.

well all i will say is i think my engines are better than a gm crate engine . for the money you may get more from someone like erik or me or some that built more than dozen. big blocks what you are looking for is 500 or 600 hp if you are driving this at low rpms then look at QT not hp the stock Oports 781 or 049 will work with some work or a alum O port head around 270 cc intake . i would not even think of any thing past 310 cc this all would work around the cid and cr to get the right cam and top end to move what you have .thanks for the kind remarks but the more engine i build the more i think. there is many things to think about:)

I can give you a rough idea of what it takes to build an easy 500+ hp 496.
With the 781 heads do a good bowl blend install 2.19/1.88 valves along with a good valve job.
Try to keep your comp. ratio around 9.0 to 1 this way you can run on any pump gas.
I would run a hyd. roller cam that has at or around 230 to 235 of duration at .050. on the intake side and say around .600 lift.
This should give you power from 2,000 to around 6,000 rpms.
Run a RPM performer intake with either a good flowed 750 or just bolt on a 850 and try it.
I have built a few of these over the years and they are very flexible and require very little done to them.
This will work great with a 2,800 to 3,000 stall and a 3.73/3.90 gear.

Pat and Erik, I thankyou for the advice. Pat you mentioned one of you building an engine for better money could you give me a little more information or PM me if you need, or I can give you my e-mail.

Erik, without trying to sound like a numbers lover, I would like a little more power than that. My '05 Silverado makes close to that and I would like my play truck to be a little more radical. If I can get the performance and times out of 500hp then I would be happy with it but I am guessing I will wish I went more extreme if I were to settle.

I realize you two are the gurus when it comes to big blocks on here and I don't want to come across the wrong way I am still up for any suggestions or advice you guys are willing to help me out with.
