Piston Coatings 101

Mahle has used a "Grafal Coated " piston for a long time.
I would never mess around with any "do it youself" stuff.
If you shop around you can find a set of Mahle pistons with rings for $500.

Ok, so this hard coating is on the skirt. Well, back to what I said before: The piston skirt does not wear significantly in the lifetime of the engine. So, coatings used to protect the skirt serve no significant function. If you're scuffing piston skirts it's because your piston to wall clearances were too tight in the first place. Personally, I like the idea of coatings that make the skirt more slick to protect the cylinder wall, not the piston.

Gouges on the skirt won't hurt anything, either. This is especially true on the sides of the piston near the wrist pin. There is very minimal loading of that part of the piston. If you do gouge the skirt, you just need to take a file or stone and make sure there are no high spots around the gouge.
