i'm going to purchase a 454 big block in a motorhome, it's got 50,000 miles on it and they want $600 for the engine. I just want to know if the engine has peanut port heads (236-360 casting) the motorhome looks like a 1980's. i'm not exactly sure if they put large port heads on them. do any of you guys know.
Its probably the same as the school bus engine Good boat anchor, but numbers would tell all.:D
IMO $600 bucks for the engine. hell I'd buy that. good deal. you can always get a cheap pair at a machine shop.
They didnt use 454's in school buses, as far as I know. If it's a 454 for sure, it's a good deal. No way at all to know what's on it for heads, but just pull a valve cover and check, it's easy enough.Quote:

Its probalbly a 366, I am told these are junk... they are a raised deck engine.
gm never made a junk big block engine the 366 is not a hot rod engine but there is many thing that can be used to build a396to 427. engine with the right short 396-454 short deck block . a 366 4 bolt main caps crank heads rods can be used to build some thing better if a tall deck 427 you can get 526 out of one and more $600 is not bad for a big block 454 if that is what you are getting . i do not pay that much for them i use just the blocks and build them to 486/496 or 513.but if you want just a mild build and you get a crank ,block, rods , heads, then your set
most gm powered motorhomes i have seen either had a 350(small motorhome) or a 454 in them. i honestly have never seen one with the industial 366 in it.
school buses and grain trucks i have seen a lot of 366s and some tall 427s in.
just a thought i have a 74 4 bolt main 454 at the farm that still had the original pistons in it when the cam finally broke.
how would i tell what heads are on it other than the #s (i know it has oval ports but how would i id if peanut ports or not)
You can tell by the casting numbers on the heads....write them down and post them here, or go to www.mortec.com and check them out.

i did get a 454 4 bolt main from a burnt down motorhome it had penut ports heads .them blocks are not that good you should sell all that you can find to me:3dSMILE: you can buy the hole motorhome cheap some times that have been hit but it is hard to get rid of the body
