Splayed 4 bolt upgrade

Perhaps Pat or another BBC expert would give their expert opinion as to what the cost would be to have a 2 bolt main upgraded to a 4 bolt main splayed block. A cost of the billet caps as well as the machine work for the 2 bolt block would be appreciated. This would be done to a MK IV 454 and probably be done when the block was bored .060 to convert it over to a 496. I know many people run 2 bolt 496's, but I like rock solid bottom ends. I'm not sure if the MK IV needed to be specially clearanced when it comes to the 496 stroker crank? **)

You may want to contact the guys at Pro-Gram (330)745-1004. All they do is main caps. Pat may have some experience with the Pro-Gram people or others. I think it's a pretty precise operation and can be spendie if you're paying the full boat for the machine work.

short answer NO the bottom end of the two bolt is rock solid i have seen two bolts do what on your best day will never do or see.. the block may need some triming it has somethat to do with the rod you use more then any thing as for price i only know what i get to prep out a block tru-deck bore /hone with deck plates fit caps and drill and tap for a two bolt main block line bore cut out for bigger crank .well sounds like a lot of $$ but there is a guy i know in mich that can do it:3dSMILE:

yes done wrong you can ruin a good block by drilling in to the oil galley or just drilling deeper then you need as well as not having the rear thust line up if you going 4 bolt all the way you need someone thats done bbc. i never used the cheap caps from china i send out for line bore till i find one i can afford some guys will not line bore a block with cheap caps on them they say the cap steel can have hard spots in them .the programs are the ones to get but in the long run playing with all this stuff$$ your better buying a new block and get the 4.500 bore i bet it would not be more then1500 for the up grade you know you want a 540 any ways :D

A 540 would be sweet, but then my almost brand new 305 AFR heads with CNC combustion chambers (have less than 500 miles on them) would be too small. So 496 might be the ticket since I have everything except the short block itself and I've had no luck in locating a MK IV 4 bolt main block close to the west coast to have dialed in for a 496 stroker. With a 496 I could use my 305 AFR heads, but if these 305 heads would have been the 305 CNC heads making them 315's that would have been better! If I lived fairly close to you Pat I would love for you to do my work because I'm positive it would be done right! :3dSMILE: Whether I had you do a 4 bolt main MK IV or located a 2 bolt main to have you splay. I have no idea what shipping rates would run to ship a completed 496 short block from where you live Pat to here at 97322 in Albany Oregon. I'm trying to decide whether to use a big hyd roller camshaft or risk running a solid roller camshaft on the street? This would be in a Model A roadster (never hook up) and less than 2,000 miles a year at the very most. My ride is strictly a fair weather ride when there is NO clouds in the sky. :HMMM:

i have one 454 with the program caps i was going to put on it along with the 310 canfields heads i have and put it in my gto and sell all of my donovans i could short block you a 496 or sell you a 496 block with the steel caps and all machine work done have to look in the shipping if you want it i pick up the blocks some time ago and the one block some one lost one of the main caps so i was going to do the 4 bolt steel caps any ways the caps are used but are just fine after a line bore and take less work then new ones less to cut out when it gets a line bore

i would run a solid roller cam it will work just fine if you like the solid roller sound i run many big roller on the street just PM me if you want i will give you my number and send photos of what i have.i am going out now so i get back to you latter on
