Stroker crank 4.25 or 4.50

I have a question for Pat regarding stroker cranks. I've been considering building a 496 with a 4.25 stroker crank & a .060 bore on a 454 which you are aware. Now my question is how difficult is it machining wise to step up from a 4.25 crank in a 454 to a 4.50" stroker crank and say only bore the 454 .030 (4.280") ending up with a 518 BBC stroker? I think if you used a 4.50 crank and bored the 454 .060 you would end up with a 525 cc BBC. I know there is no substitute for cubic inches. I have no idea as to how a 518 would run in comparison to a 525 cc BBC. I'm sure Pat and some of you other members have built these kind of engine so I'm wanting your input. Thanks in advance!

i have and you can put a 4.375 crank in a 9.800 deck block the 4.500 could be done but alot more $$ if your trying to get past 500 cid it may be better buying a block that can go to 4.500 to 4.625 bore that with a 4.250 crank can get you anywere from 540to past 565 and no need for custom pistons the CH for the 4.500 crank would be a ch of 1.140 or 1.165 would have alot to do with the deck heigth of the block now and you would need a cut counter weigth crank to get the 6.385 rod around the crank so added heavy metal very well will be needed. But you could run the 400 longer rod with a 2.100 sbc rod journal and with a 927 wrist pin could help with the counter weight and heavy metal but still have the very short ch of 1.015? could they be built ? i think with the small pin they could with .043 rings or have a set of custom rods so the ch could be around 1.070 or there are other ways to but all very $$$ so a dart or world block start looking like a great deal

Thanks Pat, I am just trying to weigh all my options and make the BEST choice the first time around. I guess my tax refund is burning a hole in my pocket and it has not even got here yet!!! My wife keeps asking me if this black hole in my wallet will ever go away? Sometimes the best answer is no answer at all. :)

there is nothing that raises the $$$$level of an engine build as a longer stroke crank---they always require new crank, rods, pistons, clearance issues, balance issues, lubrication etc

If you already have a 4.250 crank/rods, buy a dart block and go big on the bore size

well jerry the 4.500 crank would as well as the 4.375 crank in the 9.800 deck there not a SRP shelf pistons for the builds as well as a cut counter weigth crank shaft4.500 for the very small 6.385 rods that not a stocking scat cat etc crank will rise the price of the build that a 496 would be much cheaper with hyper or cast steel cranks and shelf pistons of all shapes and size :D i built some and the 4.375 crank engines that i have built or sold parts for them all were customs pistons . or i made them on the mill and cut them down.there was not at the time of build a shelf srp pistons that was a stocking number pistons let say hypers$300to $750.496 and for the 4.375 4.500 $1000. for a set pistons . as for the 496 i built and rebuilt more 4.250 crank engines from 489to 565 i lost count i did more of them then stock 454 s engines:D the 496 is a ez build and every thing is on the shelf no custom pistons or cut cranks or added time that you would see in the 4.500 crank .but the 4.375 is very achievable with a set of cutoms pistons and would be happy to send you one STYLING Z short block or long block if you have the need for one:D i do have a World PRO block that would make a very good start on a 540 or 565:D
