shawnlee, i wasn't all that worried on breakin of my last flat tappet break in, didn't even have the valve lash adjusted properly before fire up...boy what a pain that was, adjusting lash and a new carb and timing all while trying to keep the engine at 2000, at that time i knew a cam opened and closed valves but that was it, i made my cam decision based on the name not the specs, it ran well but the power was a bit higher in the rpm range then i wanted, now i have something to look back on and say to myself take your time and do it right, we live and we learn...

another question, i have been considering stroking to 496, but this would be extra $ i may not need to spend, if the crank i have it good i will re-use it, if its bad and i need a new one anyways, is it justifyable to get a larger stroke in it?

well .. hear is why i put roller cams in you say you were not worry on break in ? well you should be the first 20 min in a engines life is every thing .and did not adjust your lifers right ? well you were just lucky .i seen pro built engine wipe cams .you have not bulit any engines till you lost a cam .anyone that been at this game has lost one .if not then you have not built many engine .i can tell you it not a good feeling .every thing right fire up first crank and some time down the road the cam wipes or on breakin. i done short blocks for guys and they put the top end on to save some money .well there alot going on in the top end many things for someone to screw up. then there is break in **)

hasnt been used at the current bore size, im not sure what type of piston it was bored for, but the mechanic i bought it from had the hyper pistons for it...

yes i was very lucky that cam held up with what i did to it, i have never built an engine, this is my first attempt, the 350 i just rebuilt the top end, edelbrock cam, a set of larger valved OEM heads(used), edelbrock springs, edelbrock intake(used) and carb and air cleaner... the bottom end gave out on me so im putting this 454 in its place and if there isnt too much damage to the block maybe rebuilding the 350 all over again, selling the good parts to help offset the cost of the bbc

heads are for a 5/6 block look like a set i have seting in the shop . get a shot of the IN take ports as for the block it looks like it never been deck so you may want to do that hone looks good but abit coares for my liking but could be just the photo or done with diamond hone .hard to say if it was ever deck plated .would have to check that with a bore gauge if they are dead on from top to bottom of bore as it sets them it was never done . it is not the end of the world if it was not. but nice to have done. blocks like world pro block dart big M s and the old mark 4 bow ties they do not move much

i ordered the roller cam you reccomended yesterday, so will be interested in the roller rockers, if you still want to give them up pm me with a price...will my stock springs be ok with this cam?

i do have a set of roller rockers but you wanted the roller lifters .i have a set of roller lifters in the shop .i will look them over and get back to you next week on them for price. on your springs i do not know what you have for your heads.you could use every thing you have cut the heads get the cc down as well as deck the block to O or all most and you will have a good runner with that cam .not a world beater but .would run fine. them heads you have should be 3/8 tower bolts not a 7/16 rocker stud. so you can not adjust you valve train you can drill and tap them on a mill to 7/16 top and bottom 7/16 stud that what i do or buy the 3/8 to 7/16 rocker stud $$.if you just want new stock steel stamp rockers i have them new rockers balls and tower bolts.cheap on them heads they are the bigger O port head s should work fine

woops, i meant to say roller lifters, im not concerned with the rockers right now, i have a set of stamped rockers to use, and if i decide to go roller up there i can do that later,

take a shot of the top of the head and i can tell you what spring you can use and if you have rotaters if you know ?if so then you need springs out of a gen 6 engine stock springs should do i will be on latter i have to go do some work

if I have this zero decked, is the need still there for the intake spacers because of the tall deck?

found this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ESP-104564250/ crank for $270 with a 4.250" stroke... this will put me at 496ci with the .060 bore right? having a longer stroke would bring up the compression ratio on its own...I think the old crank is still salvageable, but for the extra cubes that price looks pretty tempting

run your number your block is not a 454 if it a 427 tall deck less some one put a 454 crank in your block then you would use longer rods .if you go to 496 you need dif pistons yours will not work .the front of your block looks like a 454 .i can tell from the top water pump bolt hole and the deck if that less then 1/4 it a short deck block not a tall deck

have run the casting #s it is a 454, even has 7.4 stamped on the side, maybe just the heads are a tall deck?

this engine came from an irrigation pump, so i could believe it, i will measure when i get back home

well there is a break off the gen 5/6 heads will fit your block short or tall deck so they will fit your engine .i have put the gen 5/6 heads on older block s with the felpro 1035 head gaskets .BUT like i said you can not use the older mark 4 1965-90 heads on your block they will leak.as for making your engine a 496 i done 2 of the gen 5 blocks like yours and some bigger bore stuff with the gen 6 502 to 548 ,and many with the mark 4 block .gm bow tie .world pro block . dart. donovan from 540to 632+ cid

from the top water pump bolt hole to the head deck i measure at 1/8"
