big block blowing up oil filters

I just aquired a 68 1/2 ton truck with a 454. The engine is supposed to be fresh. We started it and it ran for 10 seconds then the seal blew out of the oil filter(what a mess). Thinking it was the fram filter that was on it i bought a napa filter,installed it and filled it with oil and it did the same thing. A friend told me that the filter adapter by pass was probably bad. When i tore it apart the spring fell out in three pieces. I purchased a new filter adapter,oil and a ac delco filter. We then started it and 10 seconds later it blew the seal out again.The guy we got the truck from does not have any info on the rebild as he aquired it from some one that knew nothing about the truck.Any one ever expierence this before?

A quick Google "454 Blown Oil Filters" shows that this is not a unique situation - it has happened to others with 454's, but I could not find any definitive answer. Maybe one of the resident BBC guys like Pat can help? Do you have a mechanical guage on it so you know your pressure?

Relief valve in the oil pump sticking maybe? You need a gauge to tell you what your oil pressure is.

was the truck running when you pick it up ? did you drive this truck it all ? did this just start or did you buy it knowing it was like this ???its not the filter by pass but you know that now . would be good to know what you have for psi at idle .sounds like the relief is stuck in pump like don said i would go with that or take out the shim under the by pass spring some guys jack this up . many of the bbc i build start cool at 70 with a hv pump but when oil warms up they drop .i never blew out filter case but frams are junk try a wix .i always grab the case and tested them if i can squeeze the filter case i do not use them very low tec but a good freind told me that one 30 years ago with my first bbc. what oil are you running?for wt?gear oil? .if this engine was set up on the small side of oil clearance threre s no need for hv oil pump all s that your going to get is a worn up dist and cam gear . that truck should not be hard to drop the pan and fix the pump or buy a new one .then use a one pc pan gasket with the helpers that hold the gasket up they come in the pan kit ...OK your saying your blowing the seal out and not the case? then the seal surface is not flat or a old seal is stuck up in the block .or your not getting the filter seal up to the block. oil filter adapter/bolts hitting the oil filter stopping it from getting to the block for a good seal.... bolts to long on the oil filter adapter bottom out in block holding it up just a wee bit .do a dry fit cover the steel inside with a marker spin it on check for mark s were bolts could be hitting the .the seal is set in the filter the only way your going to blow that out is if the filter is not sealing up good or you have some thing like a older block 67 that some ones cobbled up a adapter on it ??? get the block number s may not be a 454 the normal way to get one ? could be a older block 427 block ??? or any thing ??
