Oil pump

Will install my oil pump and pan soon, I picked up a 7qt pan with a pickup that has the bolt tab on it, the pump is a melling HV for a 454, what will I have to retorque that bolt to, its one of the bolts on the pump, not pump to block.:confused:

tab on oil pickup for the 1/4 bolt hole that is held by the oil pump body? you need to take the oil pump off the rear main cap to drive in the pickup into the oilpump i tack weld them to .less you want to bust up some parts the oil pump needs to come off the cap. the oil pump can have a 7/16 bolt or stud i use a ARP stud most of the time .with a bolt you want to make sure you do not bottom out as some bbc maine caps on #5 are drilled and tap threw the cap with to long of a bolt can load the lower main bearing and take out the crank

Pat ,the pump is new,and still in the box. I did pick up an arp stud. I need to bolt the pickup to the bottom of the cover, should the bolt be retorqued and to what? 20lb? inch lb? thanks for your time!

i can see from the photo looks to be a china pick up you will need to fit the pick up to the pump body oil pump hole. the pickup can not fit some times I.D with to much press and there no drive point or shoulder to drive the pickup in to the pump. this is were you need to file I.D or trim pickup tube down with a belt sander so you do not beat the pickup tube to death . then set pickup for pan depth then i weld them on all the way around the oil pump body so it will not suck air . with by pass spring out so the heat will not screw the by pass spring up . i tig weld the pickup on .wash very good .blow out . make sure bypass is not hanning up .cover bolt i done so many that the TQ on them bolts is set in my hand wrench . it not much i use just a dab of red on them cover bolts its inch pounds it,s not much .OH and some of them pans need to be hit out from the inside the back part of the pan hang s up on the cap/oil pump .dry fit the pan.... rub were they over lap. i only used 3 or 4 .i do not care for them wash and blow all that stuff out very ..very good

Thanks Pat! one more, this is my first go around with a big block, the small hose from the water pump to the front of the intake, what is the purpose of this hose?

Helps flow thru the cooling system.

It's called " by pass " because it " by passes " the thermostat.

From the pic of the oil pump & pick up, it looks like the pick up would bolt to the body of the pump using the tab.
IDK what the torque would be for it, I'm surprised there were no instructions with it.

No instructions, Like Pat said its a china pick up, so who knows if it ever had instructions. Anyway, the ARP oil pump stud, should this be torqued? I know the nut ON the stud needs to be torqued , but the stud it self? or turn in till it stops? loctite? and is there a gasket that go's between the oil pump an block? I know these are easy stuff for you guys , so thanks for helping.

its 1/4 bolt threw pump body its inch pounds and is a china pan kit as from what i can see . used them i told him how to go about it . but as i used good old usa stuff as well they do not tell you much. it,s you make fit and good luck to you. so i am thinking #4 did not work for you?

thread the stud in the cap till stops by hand back out 1/4 of a turn put oil pump on then TQ nut down to 65/70 with arp moly never used loc tite on threads less your ready to pull TQ up on stud the loctite well be on the wrong side of thread pitch and can make the stud back out there not need for thread locker on that stud

Again, thank you for the info, took a look at summit's web site, and see there is agasket thats made of copper, that go's beteew the pump and block, dont know why my block gasket kit did not have this with it.

thats is some thing you do not need if the finsh is good. i built 100s with out that copper gaskets nothing is better

you will be fine .if the cap looks so/so i pull the dowel pins out of cap then lap the mounting surface of the cap till smooth .most all the time it is fine i only had to fix 3 or 4 over 25+ years of building bbc
