I have a chevy 454 w/ a 4 barrel carter carb stock heads stock exaust it has 107,000 miles on it and the radiator is in good condition and the rest of the engine has been well maintained but i do race the engine often and it seems to run a little rich on the right side of my dual exaust ive checked the tube shape length and number of curves seems all fine when you stand behind my car you can hear and feel the right exaust tube much more than the left. what could this be?
Does the 454 have header's on it , they are pretty much a necessity on any high performance 454.It also could be you might have a bad plug wire or plug on that left side. Never had much experience with Carter's. But on a holley you could change the jet's if one side was running richer than the other,I have heard of this before.
you may want to check all the plugs see if any are wet oil fuel water or burned your problem could be alot of things check your compression might be time for a rebuild. 107,000 on a big block you race ?????
You ought to check your intake as well. It could be an intake seal thats causing a vacum leak on the other side and you have leaned to compensate. Sounds odd, but its a possibility. As for the louder one side, check your exhaust rings and manifold seals. If thats not it, check for a cracked mainfold. And 107K is a bit high on a BB for racing. Has it been rebuilt?
Good advice, thanks. The engine is not rebuilt, but well maintained by a single owner before I purchased it. I dont really race the car in actual races, I just like opening up the secondarys on the 750 cfm carb and let it roar through the gears.I've recently modified the dual exauast to a more straight design, I was able to remove five feet, and four bends on both sides. I can feel a huge diffrence in the acceleration, also the tone is much deeper now. The most difficult part was modifing the exaust hangers. 72 caprice BB
