Looking for suggestions on first time build

I have a 71 chevelle that I want to build a engine for. The engine that I have in mind is a 30over 350 chevy.

From what I can tell its a 1974 160 bhp 4 bolt main engine. The tranny that I have is a Turbo 350. This car will not be a daily driver nor am I planing on doing any serious racing ( aside from the ocassional stop light sprint). Id like to build a engine that makes power from near idle to about 5500 rpm and makes 300 to 350 hp at the rear wheels. Fuel mileage is not a concern as this will not be a daily driver. Id like to also keep costs down as much as possible. I guess I'm looking for a direction to go with
this as its my first solo attempt to build up a engine. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Are the hp #'s im after realistic ? Can I accomplish this using say domed pistons with these stock heads, a mild cam and good intake and carb? Can I use vortec heads and intake with dished or flat pistons to get close to thoughs #'s? I know what results I'm after but I don't know the best and cheapest way to acheive them..... Thoughts?

If you are doing this for the challenge, by all means, do the rebuild. The GM ZZ4 crate engine with run around $3800 plus sales tax. This is hard to beat when adding the cost of your parts, machine work and personal time involved. This engine also has a 2/24 warranty as well

Its not so much that I'm looking for a challenge as I wanna be able to say I built this car (engine and tranny included) myself. Am I wrong to think that I can attain a 350 ballpark horsepower range for less then $4000?? Im sure that the ZZ4 is a kick!ss engine but I was really wanting to use what I have as a base and
go from there.....

"How to build the smallblock Chevrolet" (Larry Atherton and Larry Schreib) ISBN 0-931472-26-1

"How to build max performance Chevy small blocks on a budget" (David Vizard) ISBN 1-884089-34-8

"How to rebuild your small-block Chevy" (David Vizard) ISBN 1-55788-029-8

The max performance book by Vizard is one of the best books out there. He even gives you 10 different engine combos - with every detail you need - and they are dyno tested.
