opinion on a 327 already built

I am trying to get close to the L-78 vette or L-79 spec as i can I am thinking about 9.25 to 1 with the pistons i have. hope in the hi 380hp. The L-78,79 from what i have been able to find was in the area of 360hp. Or do i have more than i hoped for?


I would rather not fall into the "I want 400-500 HP" people. I would like to drive it on the street and strip to?

My best guess for your combination would be 325 hp.

Compression ratio with an estimated 4 cc's of deck (0.020" in the hole) would be 9.38:1

Crane makes an L-79 clone cam.

The original L-79 had about 10.5:1 compresssion and was rated at about 360 hp. But, that was "gross" hp.

So what is the difference in the rod lengths if i have one of the 275hp 327 and the L-79 Did they make a special rod for those two blocks?

The 9.25 is what the piston manufacture said it would produce with a certian head cc. thats where I got the numbers. I have the 5.7" rods

All small block chevy's with the exception of the 400 came with 5.7" rods. So unless you have an aftermarket rod that is longer you should have 5.7". Now piston pin height can vary somewhat on pistons for the 327, some sit higher in the bore while others a little lower. If that is what you are asking.

The rods are all the same except the 400 has 5.56" rods.

The L-79 engine came with domed pistons.
