383 Intake ADVICE needed....

383 SBC
10.5 CR
Solid cam 242/250 520/540 @ 50(xs282s comp)
AFR 195's
Holley 750
3000 rpm stall convertor
3.42 rear end


I have a dart dual plane intake now, and from the previous owner there's a small 3/8"x 2" rectangle cut out of the area separating the plenum

What would be the best intake for my intended use?

Must be low-profile...fit under 79 z-28 stock hood.

90/10 street strip

Love ripping thru the gears from 20mph to 70 or so on the street

LOVE low end torque, but want it to scream thru 6500 rpms...and pull hard the whole way!

IDEAS? Vic Jr? RPM Performer? Weiand Stealth? Holley?

Also, what would you venture to say this unit puts out HP-wise once tuned? I plan on taking it by the end of the month.

With the parts you've listed, I think your motor's a candidate for a Edelbrock RPM Air Gap (1,500 - 6,500 rpm's). A single plane such as a Victor Jr. will make power from 3,500 - 8,000 and would miss the range of power you're lookin' for by a little.

I have an engine similar to yours (mine has a Magnum 280 cam), and I went with an Edelbrock RPM only because I could not get a polished Air Gap. I toyed with the idea of using a Victor Jr. simply because it would have given me almost 25 hp more on top end, but I would have lost a lot of bottom end torque, and given the fact that most of my driving time was below 3500 rpm , and because I don't drag race the car, I decided the RPM was the most logical choice. I port matched it to the AFR 190 heads, and it made 450 hp and 467 ft lbs of torque on the dyno. No disappointments.

is that 383 enough for your camaro? what kinda tranny you got? what came stock in the car? and what did you do about the torsion bar, did you buy the kit?

I don't have a Camaro. My ride is a '32 Ford 3-Window Coupe, and that 383 is ferocious--makes for quite a ride when you nail the throttle. With the 700R4 tranny's low first gear coupled with a 3.89:1 limited slip rear end, acceleration is pretty impressive. I figure the power to weight ratio is comparable to a Dodge Viper.

On my 383 I'm using a Dart Cool can (RPM air gap) my combo I'm using 5.7 rods flat top pisons. 10.1cr Dart Pro 1 heads 200, 72cc chambers 2.05 in 160 ex. Comp cams hyd roller cam 8-422-8 w/1.65 in (544lift) and 1.55 ex (519lift).
