ok i want 3 inch piping i know that...but i want REALLY REALLY LOUD i dont know what muffler ill be satisied with...i have a 71 nova just installed a mild racing cam... now if some1 can please tel me what kind of mufflers i should get ...improbably going to turn them down right after the muffler...but i want like a 1 chamber exhaust REALLY LOUD if you kno of any companies that sound nice...PLEASE RESPOND:confused:
Maybe you should look at the flowmaster 400 series thats their loudest muffler.carlg
Having been there, done that, I don't think you're gonna like the undercar rumble you'll get with terminating the pipes under the car right after the mufflers. It resonates through all the sheet metal of the car and makes it miserable to drive after a while.
Also, unless you're runnin' a 600 hp big block, there's no reason you'll need 3" pipes. I know it's all the rage, but it'll do you no good if you have just a street-type small block. As a matter of fact, you'll probably see more low-end torque from the motor with some reasonably sized piping like 2 1/4". No matter what anyone says to the contrary, a motor needs a little bit of back pressure to operate properly. When NHRA racers were forced to put mufflers on their Super class cars, they found out much to their surprise that the cars went faster and quicker with the little bit of back pressure afforded by the mufflers as opposed to straight out the collectors. 3" pipes will be a mis-match in your combination, like I said, unless your making 600 hp.
I can't recommend one muffler over the other because I only use glasspacks. If you were to run 2 1/4" pipes through a couple of shorty glasspacks and to the outside of the car, I think you'd have all the noise you could stand. Run a 2" H or X pipe between the pipes after the collectors and before the mufflers.
I don't know the specs on your "mild racing cam", but unless you chose a cam to operate with your static compression ratio, you may find that the car is slower since the cam change due to a soggier bottom end.
a friend of mine has flowmaster 40's, I believe, on his 5.0 with turn downs right before the axle. It's not that bad and it has a nice rumble.
I guess if you want it loud, you could due away compleatly with a muffler and have it run right by getting a 3" pipe, fairly short like 18" then get a 2" pipe of the same length, and I would recomend a max of 2 1/2" exzaust system. You will need 2 2 1/2" to 2" converters or 2 1/4" to 2" converters then with your 3" pipe, get your 2" pipe, drill enough 1/4" holes in the 2" pipe that you think it is going to do somthing, 120 or so would do it, evenly spaced and marked so both mufflers turn out right. Take your drilled 2" then run it inside the 3" pipe, and slide on the 2" end to the 2" pipe on each end, you may need to reduce the 3" pipe to 2 1/2 to make it work so you can weld everything up, but in the end, you have a nice set of loud resonators that should provide enough backpreassure to follow what Tech said. and for what, a few houres time and probably 15 bucks in supplys.
I have DynoMax Ultra flows with a three inch exhaust--great sound.
I have a set of Lobaks and really like the way they sound!! No glass to get old and they lood good also!! They are the spiral type of muffler! They can be purchased at:

I would exit the car with the exhaust and not underneath the car because I would want the sound going out to all to hear the beautiful rumble and not only to my ears inside the car!!

You may have more problem than just resonance, if you dump under the car. Exhaust fumes ain' no fun to breathe.
Run 2 1/4" to the muffler, 2 1/2" after. Dump it in front of the rear wheels. I'm running Dynomax Turbos ( glasspacks ) on my 64 C10 and they are too loud for my taste. ( 350 ). Got resonance too... it's actually louder in the truck than outside!
On my 78 firebird, I am running some 3" inlet/outlet flowmasters ( hey, they were free! ) with 2 1/4" pipe, and they are fairly quiet, but have a healty tone ( 305 )
both vehicles have Summit headers, and dump in front of the rear wheels.
You might also consider exhaust cut-outs. That oughta give your eardrums the abuse you are seeking!
I think you are not going to like the result. I agree with Techinspector.
It sounds like you might like Lakers instead of a 3" exhaust. I run a 2.5"exhaust, and I am going to 2.25 instead. There is the power sound, and there is accumulating tickets along with ringing ears.
MY BUDDY HAS A 64 CHEVELLE W/ A MILDLY BUILT 350 W/ DUAL GLASS PACKS ON 2 1/4" PIPES ITS PRETTY F*CKING LOUD, BUT WHY NOT JUST GO W/ STRAIGHT PIPES W/ NO MUFFLERS? WHAT'S LOUDER THAT NO MUFFLERS? END THEM JUST BEHIND THE REAR AXLE, MAYBE TURN THEM DOWN AND THEY WILL RUMBLE YOU CAR...
i have used the big block flow masters they sound good on 3 1/2 and dynomax small case type bullets4 inch a lot of them and the 3 1/2 and the 4 inch big case type round .and the howe howe Quites i have used a some of the flow masters 40 type .i run the dynomax 4 inchbig round case type with a X cross my gto and runs out the back and out the side a it sound geat and have done the xcross with the smaller 2 1/2 3 for a very mild engine dynomax to and some mac mufflers to. i think 3 to 3 1/2 for a real hot small block or big block and a race type engine over 600hp 3 1/2 TO 4 INCH
