Yep, that'll work fine. Nice long ramps so it will be easy on the valvetrain and ground on 112 degree LDA for a good idle and good vacuum.Quote:

You got me wondering, so I looked up my past orders on their web site. I've only been charged $8.99 per order handling and no shipping. The most I've ordered at once was a master kit and a rering kit. I don't remember if they came in the same shipping box. This was in August, and I just ordered a Proform distributor and some roller rockers. They are having some good deals on HEI distributors for the next couple of days, $116 for sbc racing HEI without vacuum adv, $90 for oem replacement. Back in the 60's and 70's the 283 built to a 301 was fad that ran real well, those engines had 327 cranks and some used high hp pistons and heads with mild cams. FYI :eek:
i bought the master kit mine is stock. bored 0.60. and im building the 283 because it's a lot cooler sounding the 350 lol

Sorry did not want to confuse you, I just checked it said a $8.99 for handling per box, might got confused on the 2 day rates it is a little confusing using there table. Give a $ amount plus shipping, plus 2 day rate. thanks for your help, probably going to get 1 from them. Good to hear another peanut motor user....you are right these are a dime a dozen....In fact I think I have a dozen or so lying around....Most people pass by them on the way to a bigger motor....But in a lighter car these will go good and get very respectible gas mileage.....I'd love to see what one of these would be capable of with a set of Vortec heads...
Like Tech said stay with the cam suggested....a 265cam is borderline for these with streetability...well depends how you difine streeable.....
Actualy a 283 with a 327 crank (3.25" stroke) is a 307. Nobody wants one of those. The 301 was a 283 bored .120 over to 3.995 with the stock 3" crank . Or you could use a 327 block which is 4' bore and a 283 crank but few people that had a 327 wanted a smaller engine. When Chevy started making their own version for the 1967 Z28 they used a 4" bore block and a large journal 3" crank. This gave just a hair more bore so they called it a 302 when in fact it was a fraction of a cubic inch less and still a 301.something.Quote:

We mostly used the Duntov cam and Corvette dual quads with ported Power Pak heads. The bucks up guys would use Offy or Edelbrock dual quad intakes with a pair of 409 AFBs. I had a friend that had Crane heads, the AFBs, an Engle solid roller cam and Headman headers with a 4 speed in his '57. That was a high zoot car for the time. Fast too.
A 283 is a good engine. I have had one in my '59 Corvette for 35 years. It has the Vette dual quads and an old Wolverine solid cam. I have been thinking of building a 301 for it though. The easy way to do that now is to use 350 pistons for 6.0 inch rods on 5.7 " rods. If I remember right you deck to .020 in the hole and you are good to go. There is a vast selection of 350 pistons but 302s have very few offerings and they are $$

The last recipe I got was 283, .030 over, 327 crank with 2.02 intake heads.
But I don't think .030 over will clear 2.02 intake valves.

dr bowtie.. i have a q for u... i seen that you have a 283 bored 60 over... whats it run like ... what ya got it in... i have the same thing .. its all stock ... 60 over, holley intake and 600 cfm carb... summit headers in a 1950 chevy... u had said sumthin about the vortech heads???.. . what would those run like on a 283?? or would they even work... cuz i might look in to that .. i can get a top end very cheap.... thanx
don't know about the Vortech heads but even with power pack heads you can get over 300 h.p. out of a 283. I also have one in my 55, bored .060, 10-1 pistons, cam, Edelbrock etc. runs great and really surprises a lot of people.
Thank you for your responce, This is my first build so taking in all the info I can, like i said earlier reason so far for the motor is $. Basically got some extra parts thrown in with my truck, carbs that would not work for me . I took and sold one of them which will cover the cost of the motor so geeting it for free. Thats OKAY WITH ME. There will $ spent in a lot of other places in this build. Think I like it best when my son who is 4 was inside on floorboard helping to scrape off insulation and having fun with me. Went to Good GUYS recently had a blast with him and the wife. Now she wants a muscle car, guess started something, but least we are doing it together. Know you did not ask for all this , maybe it can help some else doing same. Thanks a bunch BrianQuote:
