283 Cam Suggestions

I'm doing a 283 bulidup with 305 heads.. im thinking about going with a single plane intake..

im looking for a cam that will match my motor..
here are a few specs that i need somebody to help me decipher through

#1,2, number 4 is a typo. on the lift side.Number 2 is the one I would go with do to it's extra duration on the exhaust side. Both of these cams will require a stall to get the car moving.They also might need a gear change.With an engine this small you would benefit rom a dual plane manifold like a Performer,or a Performer rpm.

I believe you would be MUCH happier running a dual plane intake with those heads as single planes work best mid - upper rpm, the dual will work from idle to approx 5500 rpm which is past the stock 305's breathing range IMHO.

As for the cam choice, as for the ones you listed, I agree the #2 choice would work the best with those heads, and great behind a auto trans.

Well, I've only ever built one 283 and it was in a hyped up rage and a bet right after I blew a engine street racing. After I got my busted motor home the guy I was racing when it blew came by and started running his mouth and P.O.ed me a little more kinda like digging in a open wound and I had an old bone stock 283 in a corner that came out a '63 Impala and I told him I would build that lil baby motor and spank him right now!! He laid $250.00 on the table and told me he'd make me blow another one and take my money. So, I pulled my busted motor, went up in the loft of my shed and got down some old angle milled 461X and a matching Victor Jr. intake. I grabbed a Erson solid roller 278 and lifters out of another box. ( I think the specs were 236/246@.050 on a 108 LSA with .555 lift) I still got it somewhere. And built this motor with a used .018" copper shim head gasket and parts laying around in about an hour and a half it was running in the car. When I backed it onto the road and hit it in front my driveway, I knew what was up. This lil baby motor was pretty bad!! Ol' boy was leading the way and I was hanging back looking for my power band. When we got to the river road, we lined up, and when we took off, I thought I was in trouble. That lil motor let him jump me by a car at least but when it hit 4k RPM, the race was on. I held that lil motor to 7500 and shifted out of fear, not cause it quit pulling. I beat him by 1-1/2 cars and he came up with some lame excuse so he added another 100 bucks to his side and we ran again. I came off the line at 5k and it picked the front wheels up about 8-10 inches and was gone. I beat him by 4-cars that run and he didn't even stop and come back. I got my money from the flagger, me and my boys went back to my house to drink some beer and laugh. I kept that lil baby motor in my car while I was building another one. At the track it ran some mid to high 11s

This is by no way a recommendation for you to set your motor up like this. That was a Monza and a 4-speed with 4.30 gears and a 28" tire. Just before pulling the motor, I ran it to 8200 three passes just to see if it would do it. It acted like I babyed it. Held together with no sweat. With a career best of 11.41 and still running strong, but leaky, I pulled it and put a 383 and a automatic.

my setup, 283 bored .040 over, 305 heads, holley street dominator intake, 65k ignition, i believe my compression is close to 10:1...

basically i just wanna put up a fight... so i guess im going with 3.73's since i heard 283's can hold rpms, and ill be driving on the highway sometimes

I would love to build a pump gas, street motor against you. I don't think you could tell the front from the back. lol
Do you realize a lot of 283s came with steel cranks instead of cast. A good setup car with a standard and a low rear gear and a motor that's not putting out enough torque to break the wheels loose will put some mometum somewhere.

Oh and btw, I didn't ask you anyway. Keep yourself out of trouble and quit quoting me. Just answer post because I'm about tired of making you look stupid. Final note is 283s don't make low torque, high horse power and you have to turn them for that. If you thinks 8200 is bad for a 283, I had a Suzuki Swift rental for a couple days that would turn 9000 easy.

I would use the Comp Extreme Energy 256 for mild everyday driver 283. The specs are: 256/268 A.D. 212/218@.050 .447/.454 on a 110 lsa.

How much hotter of a 283 could you build. Flattops and angle milled heads will equal high compression.(11.5:1+/-) That Erson in pretty big for a 283 and the 461X with 172cc intake ports is pretty big for a 283. Then a light car, pretty low gear, and a four speed. Hello, wake up, you showing everyone your smarts again.

I know there are some old school veterans on here. Tell us about the 283s and how they like RPM.

I don't know why he would even make posts like this.If you doubted his story you have every right to.If it sounds to good to be true it probably is.I really don't think he has a handle on the fundamental's.After all why would you twist an engine way out of it's r.p.m. range ? Suzuki Swift?I had a Suzuki GSXR that I use to turn to 13,500 and your point is??The whole idea is to make h.p. at a low r.p.m. Hi r.p.m.s just mean more down time because you are always putting in valve springs,bearings and rings .Been there done that.I think that was about 1984.The word for you is (cycles).If you understand that then you have learned well.:LOL: :LOL:

Here you go showing your lack of intelligence again. He wants to build a 283. They don't make low end torque. You got to spin them to get anything out of it. If he wanted low end torque he would build a 383. Some people like to hear the whine of a engine turning 8500. Why don't you go back and read some of his posts.Now pay close attention to his possible cam choice's.Now think about the heads he has.Do you think these heads breathe well at high r.p.m.s? Fact of the matter is most 305 heads are designed for lower r.p.m. Just look at the port volume and valve size. Do you really think the any of these cams will turn a large amount of r.p.m.s? 8200 with a 283? I have never seen a steel crank in a 283,,ever, ever. I have owned a bunch of them in my life. Course I'm quite a bit older than you. I have driven a 60 Vette with a rod sticking out of the side of the block (dang that was noisy), from Coronado to North Island Naval Air Station in California in 1968 but it didn't have a steel crank either. Man, get your facts straight and grow up. Us duds that were at the time know the truth......

Look here ol' boy, I might not be 60, but I'm not some kid that can't get the facts straight, and I'm pretty sure I'm finished growing thanks.

My block is still around and it is a Heavy Duty / Marine block by the numbers. I will get them and post em. Or better yet I will email you pics of the block and crank. That block came with a steel crank. It will hold RPMs.

I respect older rodders because I can learn from them. The difference between you and them is that they don't think they have seen it all. Are you that other genius's daddy or something?

I agree that cam #2 is your best choice. You could also call four of the major cam companies (CompCams, Lunati, Crane, and Crower) get their recommendations and choose the one that is the closest to average of all recommendations. That is what I would do if I were you.

My bad, I was thinking of the 454 marine engine on the shelf. It has a steel crank and dipled rods.



The 283 has a steel crank for sure, and I believe X rods, but I'm not going dig it out & tear it down to see though.

shit my 283 will spin up to 7500+ punched it .125 to 301:3dSMILE: but i call it a 302 all the time. 12:5-1 dome's w/ 1.94 1.6 heads <new intake cam carb> going to smack on an edelbrock rpm air gap and a demon 750 or a new holley whichever i pick. but right now it goes to 7500+ and it acts like nothing. man do they sound good winding to the moon and i love it when i bury the 8k tach:3dSMILE: oh BTW next thing to go in is a 4 SPEED!!!!!!!!!!:cool:

Yeah!! That's what I been trying to tell them. A 283 don't know when to stop revving. Ol' Genius tries to act like he knows it all.

That one I had would turn 7500 and want more. It quit pulling about 8k though. I pushed it to 8200 and it acted like I idled it.

Marine engines idiot. Most big block marine have dimpled rods as do a lot of heavy duty application bb.

I wish I was as perfect as you. But unfortunatly, I make mistakes.

If you knew half as much you think you do, you would be able to build some nice hard running street engines. But then I remember your posts of quench area is unimportant on the street, and degreeing is useless on the street. ( now we understand why you do the things you do )

I have a 58 283 block with stock bore and 305 truck heads. My cam is close to #8 on the list but a little bigger, 490 lift. Goes to 6500 with mufflers and 7000 with open headers. Holley street dom intake (single plain) and edlb 650 carb. No torque but plenty of top end. Muncie 4 with 3.55 rear. Just call somebody like summit, tell them what you want and what car its going in, they'll tell you what you need.

Yeah, My 283 winds up pretty tight too... has a TH-350 and 4:11's in the rear, Edl 650 carb, performer intake and camel hump heads. I'm not sure what all has been done to the heads. I really notice the power starting around 3500-4G and goes to ?? I back off of it around 7G. Scared to go much higher Since I didnt put this motor togather. I'm not certain but I think the cam I have is close to #2. She's a lil leaky but she's all go. I'm getting ready to put togather a 327 to replace it while I go through it and freshen her up. Its a great lil street motor. I'm no young punk, but I'm no pro at this either... I know it still has good power at 7G though. Later on the 327 will go in the next project....

I have built a 283 in a restoration project of my 1966 el camino. I like crane cams and used their 266 adv grind. It is a 212/ 212 @50. I don't have it running yet but will let you know how it does. I have an oem balancer that I ordered from summit and the pulleys dont match up. it looks like I will have to try to find the stock balancer for an early 283/ 327. good luck

If I remember right, my 283 didn't have a dampner. Just had a hub with a pulley. I think I may still have it if you need it.

Damper Doctor lists 7 different dampers for a 283. Take a look....
