I have a serious question here, is it possible to make a 283 into a formidable street motor?
I ask because I found a nice little 72 Chevy Long wheelbase with a 283.
What I want to know is, with a new cam, heads, intake, carb and exhaust, it is possible to make a stout 283?
I mean Mustangs ran hog wild with a 289, but then again that was a really light car.

You would have to wind it way too hard and it wouldn't pull the truck worth a darn. They have little torque and don't make HP until high into the rpm range.

what is with all the love for 383s lately. But in that case, I'll just build up my 83 long wheelbase which I already have. Why buy a truck to rip it apart when I can rip apart a truck I already have.
Then again I do have a 350 block already bored .30 over.
My old man is against 383s for some reason, he is very odd about his motor choices.
The rip and roar surrounding the 383 is the extra cubes it offers which returns in more torque and HP and is as easy and cheap to build as a 350 with the aftermarket the way it is.Quote:

yea I knew that, I was trying to be funny. 383s are stout motors, but maybe a little too stout for what I want.

Don't get me wrong, he thinks they are great for drag racing and everything, but for the street I guess he feels it is a bit much, for me anyway.

He is just like all other fathers everywhere. He doesn't want you to get killed at such a tender age (17/18).
My son and I built a fast truck for him to have fun with in High School, but I built a cage, window net and 5-point belts into it and made him use them.
