what is detonation
Proper combustion in the chamber progresses from the sparkplug when it fires, across to the other side of the combustion chamber (of course this happens in miliseconds). The flame front moves across smoothly, and evenly. If some or all of the fuel ignites at once instead of progressively that's detonation. Also known as knock or ping. In a gasoline engine severe detonation eventually leads to damaged pistons, upper rings, and perhaps other components. In diesel engines it's the norm (no spark plug, just heat of compression for ignition source).
It is NOT pre-ignition as some mistakenly believe, nor is it run-on.
Could you explain the difference between the three, it would help to clear up some things for me and maybe others?Quote:

Pre-ignition defines the air fuel mixture being ignited before the spark plug fires, or prematurely. The fuel mixture may burn normally rather than detonate, thought since it's occuring too soon in the timing, the heat of compression may cause detonation.Quote:

Run on is the engine continuing to have a fuel source to the combustion chamber, after the spark ignition source is turned off. The ignition source will be a chunk of deposit material, or a hot spot, or perhaps overly high combustion chamber temps. Again it may have normal combustion, incomplete combustion (most likely), or possibly detonation in severe situations.
DR.Bob, I have a question. What is a Curmudgeon? Can just anyone be one or does it take some extra education and or training?Quote:

The extra education or training necessary to attain such a lofty position is far more difficult that any of those store bought degrees profered by institutions of so called higher learning. Masters degrees, doctorates, that's all panty waist stuff compared to curmudgeonliness. To justly deserve the title one must suffer the slings and arrows of lesser beings over an extended period of time. You will need to have gone into battle over a miriad of subjects and emerge victorious, much to the dismay of your opponent. You will have had to been the subject of much scorn and ridicule, never wavering in your commitment to truth, justice, and the American way. You will have had to mentor young minds that are truly unworthy of such wisdom as you possess, yet you persist in the vain hope that some day they too will learn how to achieve the pinnacles of the curmudgeon brotherhood.
Well, either that or just have a rash on your ass and take it out on anyone that gets in the way.
Thanks, I appreciate it.Quote:

Thank-you DR. Bob for all your wisdom.I too will try and follow in the way of the curmudgeon brotherhood.I know it will be a very long up hill battle and I will take no prisoners.May the curmudgeon live long and prosper.Quote:

What is a Curmudgeon anyway?
a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas
curmudgeon (noun) is a kind of:
oldster, old person, senior citizen — an elderly person
Curmudgeon:(Definition) "A crusty, ill-tempered soul who takes a dim and cynical view of persons, events, institutions, human nature and life in general."
Nonetheless, curmudgeons serve a valuable role in our political and social discourse, offering perspectives that balance out the naivete and ill-founded optimism of true believers, dimwits and gullable "sheep."
A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. . . . . . They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment. . . . . . Nature, having failed to equip them with a servicable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit.
Curmudgeons are mockers and debunkers whose bitterness is a symptom rather than a disease. They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse.
Perhaps curmudgeons have gotten a bad rap in the same way that the messenger is blamed for the message: They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor.

Which one are you ? I think the one on the left is. The one on the right, if I remember, was more into funny.
And that my friends is what I call detonation!
