Assembling my 383
hey guys,
Just a quick one currently assembling my 383 for a 78 camaro. It has a scat crank, Im pretty sure these use a 400 harmonic, can anyone clarify whether the 350 and 400 bosses are the same diameter or are they phsically different. Secondlt its running a turbo 350 will the flex plate be the same or do I need a new flex plate as well.
thanks Steve

Scat makes 'em both ways. Mine uses a 400 balancer and flywheel. The 350 flywheel has no weight and will vibrate like crazy.http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/647081

So how does one know what type of harmonic / flywheel to use, . Are the bosses on the harmoincs different or can you fit same bolt pattern a 400 flexplate to a 350 crank

The bolt pattern is the same, so they will (regrettably) interchange. But, very easy to tell the difference. The 400 flywheel has a counterweight attached to it, the 350 has none. The balancer has a big gouge taken out of it where the 350 is perfectly round.http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/647081

Thanks mate, what I was actually after is there any way of identifying from the crank only whether it needs a 400 harmonic and flexplate or a 350 harmonic and flexplate. Its a scat crank and unfortunatley scat makes the 383 cranks for both the 350 and 400 harmonics. I purchased the kit online of ebay, from someone who had given up on the rebuild and he didint even know there was a difference
