Hey 454 , I feel for you cuz Im going through the same thing, I have a 1973 Chevy C10 and Im trying to Hot Rod my 305. Its hard but with effort you can manage it, I look at it like , Anyone can make a 350 go fast and especially a BB, But it takes Talent and Skill to Make a 305 Fast. First Off Scrap the EdelBrock Carb They suck, Put on a Holley 650 Street Avenger, Second get some Decent Voltage going through the wires, Get the MSD dist./Wire Combo and then a 6a MSD Tuner. 6AL if you dont have a Built in Rev Limiter on your dist. I would Scrap the FlowMasters too, And get some Glass Packs, Te Breathe Better, Get a Nice Set of 416 Heads with 58cc Combustion chambers, and A Decent Thumper Cam. That should Make some good power. Last But Not least you can get a Nice Blower From Vortech, The S Series. With all that you should be making just about 350-400 HP. Belive me, 305's are more Compatible than everyone thinks.
Talent and skill?? First off, Edelbrock carbs dont suck, they're a great carb. Nothing wrong with Holley either, but dont blow off the Eddy...it will work fine. The stock HEI ignition is more than adaquate for any application. You dont have to invest in a MSD ignition to go fast...matter of fact, you wont go any faster with MSD unless your current system is failing and on the way out. If it runs without ignition problems now, leave it alone. Flowmaster is not my favorite muffler, but glasspaks are NOT the way to go. There are many straight thru mufflers, or even baffled types that flow great, and sound a lot better than something from the 50's. What's a 'thumper' cam?? You can upgrade your camshaft, but you have to match your cam choice to the rest of your parts. Dont just go throwing any old cam in there. A blower is a good way to make power, but makes the cam choice even more important. Blower cams are a much different grind than normally aspirated cams. Besides, a blower is big bucks, and if you start with a better block to start with, you can make power much more economically. Make sure you do research and get some good info before you go tearing anything apart. Personally, I would build something else, the 305 is OK, but never turned out to be a good performance build. You can pick up a 350 block pretty cheap, or maybe an entire engine, and go from there. John
