sbc with a 177 blower

ok heres my plan and hopefully i can get some input and some advise...i want to build a blower motor for my 1956 pontiac...i'm currently running a sbc that works alright with truck stock dished piston and double bump heads milled down to 60cc and a decent cam, headers,5speed etc...
its a four bolt main block and is standard bore...
i want to run a weiand 177 roots style blower and have done alot of reading and can get one for a good deal through my work and still give me some room to play if i wanna make more hp... i want to run it on the 350 with the stock pulley setup to start with which will run 7.4 lbs of boost...i've been thinking about goin with aluminum heads to give me a little more of a safety zone and help out with compression issues and better flow..i will have to drop my compression down to 8.5 to make it work well so i've been told and have read from holley...i was wondering what i should be looking for for pistons and combustion sizes and weather i should have the block decked...now i'm just looking into cams and am not sure yet what to be looking for for duration or lift....according to holley i shouldnt have much problem making 400hp+ if this setup is done right... so if anyone can throw some advise my way i would greatly appreciate it thanx...**)

i've always loved the sound of a blower wine when u get into it and the idle of a well tuned blower motor reving up and down all the time plus the hp

Jay, you are aware that it is the teeth on the Gilmer belt hitting against the faces of the pulleys that make the whine, right?? If the smaller blower uses conventional belts, it will be pretty quiet.

Adjust the c.r. with either piston volume or combustion chamber volume according to these instructions.....

Adjust the deck height and gasket to achieve 0.035" to 0.040" squish to keep detonation under control. Also look into some of the water injection systems that are available.

You'll notice that Blower Drive Service suggests no more than 6 lbs of boost at 8.5 to 9.0 c.r.

The 177 on a 350 will make good power. My suggestion is to find a reverse dome/D-shaped dome piston in the 8.5-9.0 CR range. Use some good aluminum 64cc chamber heads with 180-200cc runners. Use a nitrous/blower grind type cam in the 236 degree@.050 range. Run a tight quench area to stop detonation and it will be one tuff combo.

The 177 blower will work but the belt set up makes me nervous.
I would save your money and buy a 6-71 for a few hundred more.
Piston's like the Speed-Pro reverse dome will work fine.
Depending on who you talk to they will say either 110 or 112 l/s for the cam either on will work for what you are doing.
I would look at cams that have a duration of 225 to 235 at .050.
I would also have at least 6 degree's min. more of exhaust duration.
The aluminum heads will help some with the detentation issue.
At 500 or more hp I would start to look at 4340 cranks and very good h-beam rods.
At 450 or under the 1053 steel crank will work but I would buy some good i-beam rods to go with it.
Buy good head gaskets the $20 a set ones won't cut the mustard.
I would run the Cometic head gaskets.
Yes,I know they are pricey,but they are about bullet proof.
If you decide to go with the 6-71 make sure you have to key-ways cut in the crank snout.
Run a good balancer with the two-key ways.

trying to do this on somewhat of a budget....i'm only 23 and work at napa and i'm trying to get the bang for the buck.... i'n not new to engines or hot rods its been my life i just want to build a blown motor for the experience and for the fun of driving it... ohyea tech when i ment the whine i ment when ur accelerating hard they really wine i herd a 142 blower and it sounded cool but at idle u woulndt know it was there except for the wild sounding idle... u'd think it was just gonna stall the it'd rev up and just keep doing it not missing a beat....sounded very snappy

No one drills the belt. The pulley can have a small hole between each cog that allows the trapped air to escape. Same for gear to gear timing sets. Some like the whine and some don't.

It ain't all the belt. Any farmer who ever ran a bin vac knows how a Rootes type blower howls. Even a Potvin drive moans.

I couldn't agree more. Bang for the buck, you'll get better results with the 6-71.

Erik's right about the rods. If your budget allows, I'd buy a top notch steel rod and a good piston no matter what you do. Along /w those aluminum heads, a tougher piston and a stout rod will help any detonation problems because your motor won't go to pieces at the first sign of trouble.

I heard a good quote in the snap-on thread "Buy quality, and you'll only cry once"
This goes for almost everything :)

this cars does alot of street playing and crusing and aslo makes some trips to the track... i'd say 6-71 if i was be running the track alot but then i'm into alot of clearence issues.....i can pick up a 177 for $1700 plus tax and can still make it fit under the hood...and make some power...also can u run spray through a blower??? just curious i'd wouldnt do it just wanted to know...

Yep you can and it's a great idea, all blower create's lots of heat, NOS will cool you're boost temp, but if ya add the 177 & the spray you would be ib the 6-71 range $$ wise :cool:
