you will have to adjust the float level again. You want the fuel just at the bottom of the sight bowl. Fuel level is adjusted with the screw and nut assembly at the top of the float bowl. Yup, same thing as the needle and seat....
Can't you just screw the needle valve assembly all the way out the top, inspect, rinse well with water, re-install and then set the float?
If the needle valve cleans up ok, pulling the float bowl is not required.
Done that one a couple of times.
Do you have a good fuel filter?
Yes you can, but if there is grit in the bowl you take the chance of it happening again.Quote:

Great advice here guys. Let's take it a couple of steps further without complicating things. The needle and seat have a high potential for small debris entering through the lines from the proceedure when it was installed. Most cases it's just a piece of dirt that was in the line or a piece of teflon tape, etc. It's a good idea to give the lines a "small" flush to get this stuff out. Always remember; the o-rings on the needle/seat asssembly have expanded from the contact with fuel. It is imperative that a good lubricant put applied to the orifice the part will slide into and the assembly itself be applied. The o-rings will tear and peel back if installed dry making the problem as bad or worse. If all else fails, change the darn thing with a new one, they're very affordable. I don't mind even spraying the unit with WD-40, it's fuel soluable and easliy cleanable when you put a bit too much on it. P.S. replacement steel ball units are available for these units for alchohol and other type fuels, a bit more pricey but I always run those for customers because I have no idea what they're putting into the tank.
....Ok I cleaned up the needle & seat & now it doesn't pour out when I shut the car off {nor leak out when it's running}.... BUT I'm trying to adjust the float level & fuel leaks out between the float bowl & the nut! It even leaks when I have it adjusted as far down as possible. So may be I'm doing something wrong when I adjust it??? And I just ordered the Viton Seat & Needle from Jeg's. The Viton one was cheaper than the regular one! I also ordered the needle & seat hardware kit..... So is my 'O' ring bad??? It looks ok..... Or is it one of those neoprime washers??? Any ideas??? {other than take it to a mechanic ;)..... THANKS, Bill
The needle and seat should come with a new O-ring, so that's not an issue. The carb may leak while you're adjusting, but tightening the lock nut should make it stop. If not, you need new washers to go between the nut and the carb and the nut and the adjusting screw.
There should be a gasket between the nut and the bowl, a very thin gasket, at least there is on my 650 DP.
Darn good job Jack. Picture is excellent. Reminder to the re-installilation, gaskets are essential and only made of thick paper.......very essential though!
.....ah ok, then I need new washers to go between the nut & bowl and between the nut & screw. I have the see through plastic washers & may be they dried out from sitting for 5 months. The stuff I ordered should be here on Wednesday or Thursday. So I'll have a new Viton needle & seat w/ 'O' ring. Plus the new washers {two sets probably cuz I ordered the hardware kit but the needle & seat probably already come with washers}.... THANKS ;) & I'll update after I install these,..... Bill

I just cut two new small gasgets out of some water pump gasget material that I had laying around & used them in place of the gasgets that were on the needle & seat. Guess what??? Yep, it doesn't leak anymore! ;) .... Although I doubt the material I used is gasoline proof it still shows me what was/is wrong. It's not leaking now & my new gasgets will be here in a couple of days. I guess the gasgets will last that long before the gas eats 'em up??? Anyway THANKS to all who responded!!! ;0 :) .//. Bill
....yeah, in my High School car guy days I had a reputation for over-tightening things :( so when I replace the Seat I'll make sure that I don't overtighten it ;).... THANKS for the 'heads up' on that one Denny ;).... But it's going to be tempting to NOT put the new needle & seat in cuz it seems to work!! And to adjust the float level all I did was tighten the nut down, tighten the screw down & then check the float level hole & it was PURR-FECT as is!! THANKS AGAIN ;) Bill
