Today i talked to a friend who got a turbo charger for his rice rocket and now he is pushing out about 300 ponies. Which gave me the idea to get a turbo or super charger for my chevelle. I was just wondering if anybody knew a company that made one for a big block 396. I dont exactly have $4,000 to blow so i also wonder if anyone had a used one for sale.

I checked ebay 1st and all the ones i found were for small blocks or for feul injected cars, so they wouldnt work on my chevelle
If you want a blower like a 6-71, or an 8-71 you can pick them up off of ebay for about 200 bucks if you look around (the 200 dollar one's being off of older detroit/GMC trucks)
Then you just buy a snout, and new backing plate, and an intake manifold from like summit, and wala, it's blown :-)
Or if you want a turbo, your best be is going to be building your own exhaust manifolds (if you want twins). Otherwise if you want a single turbo set up, I have seen people take a set of headers that are ment foe an open drag car, and they just run straight forward/back. And you collect it in the front of the engine. And put on a big turbo right up front.
Or if engine bay room is an issue you can also put the turbo in the back of the car, but the loss of thermal energy will cause lag, and you will have to run a smaller exhaust AR size, which will make a larger back pressure in your exhaust.
If I were you I would just use a 6-71, or 8-71, because they are much easier, and much cheaper. Putting a snail under the hood costs a fair amount of money. I know, I'm putting a TO4, on my toyota supra engine, and it was already turbo'd, but it is still turning out to be quit expensive and time sinsumeing, because we have to build out own exhaust manifold.
Anyways, a blower is cut/dry, and been done alot, so it is much easier if you get an old detroit SC.
Ok im didnt really understand all of that casue im only 15 but from what i do understand a blower would be a cheaper way and thus wouldnt ruin the sound of my chevelle (i dont think the blow off valve sound from a turbo would go good with a muscle car) Could anybody give me a horse power range if i got a blower. right now i have a 396 with 375 horse power

I'm no hell expert on either vane power or exhaust power. But another option may be the Procharger which I think bolts in, in place of your aircon pump. Or the Australian Terra Charger which is a similar set up. Both use their own oil and dont produce anywhere the heat that a roots type blower does. They also sit under the bonnet.

But the blower is much easier and also cheaper. Because tuning a good turbo system is usually rather hard, and you have to find a good blow threw carb set up, unless you go fuel injected. And putting fuel injectioin on a car will cost around 2 grand to get the stand alone ECU (engine controll unit) and all the injectors/sensors/wireing.
And I'm not able to give you a HP estimate, but it all depends on what blower you use, of course the bigger you get the more HP you get. But you have like 4 main choise's, you can pick from a 3/71, 4/71, 6/71, 8/71. Or at least those are the most popular. And the xx/71 means that the blower is made for xxx number of 71 cubic inch cylinders. So a 4/71 is putting out 1/2 as much pressure/flow as an 8/71.
I would not put either type of blower on a 396/375 without re- doing the engine. If you have a true 375 hp motor you have 11-1 compression. That is way too much for a blower. You would need to change pistons down into the 8-1 range, otherwise you would blow the top off of it. I suggest you use your $4000 to tweek the motor and chasis instead. If you want the whine, put a gear drive in it.

If it was me, I would buy a set of headers, a intake, and larger valves. Mate that to a holley or edelbrock, run a high voltage coil, decent plugs, and make sure the rear end is in decent shape. Then hold on.
Whew!! I suspect that you could make about 700+HP (on pump gas) with the right stuff. Blowers make lots of power, but the power comes at a considerable investment. You would have to change pistons, rods, cam & valve-train, completely go through the block (O-ringing is a good idea). A stout bottom end (4 bolt block w/billet caps & steel crank is also recommended). Now comes the blower, drive, manifold, carbs & linkage. 2-1/8" headers, BIG exhaust system, fuel delivery system, MSD ignition, drive line, rear end, up-graded cooling system and a host of things that you never thought of. In the final analysis, $4K. won't go very far :( I suggest you stick with the basic hot-rod bolt ons for now. DonQuote:

if i were to turn my 327 into a blower motor how much would you suspect it to cost? it's got the double hump heads, it's the 327/327 horse motor in it, i'm going to rebuild it anyway and i want about 450-500 horse so i thought maybe blower?

Well when i built my 350 into a blower set-up, it cost me about 18K, however i was punping about 750-800hp. Thats canadian money mind you.
I seem to be missing the point.....i don't want a bottle, i don't know why i just think nos isn't my suit, sure it adds a ton of horsepower but i want something that is always there as a power adder not something i push for short spurts like in the quarter mile, i'm going to be driving this round town so i need something reliable yet snappy! to the tune of 450+ horse

You can get an old GMC blower (4-71/6-71/8-71/10-71.....) for like 100 bucks or so, then buy a rebuild kit for it off ebay, for around another $65 or so (there is a guy that sells them all the time), and then pick up an intake manifold to mount what ever blower to your small block. Then find a new snout, idler pully, front/rear cover, and I think that is it. And you have pretty much a hole blower set up for less than $500 bucks. But you have to upgrade you fuel, and do alot of other crap to prepare your engine to support the blower.
THE ANSWER IS EBAY!!!!! You'll find every part you need for DIRT CHEAP if you are patient and watch for about a month. I'm putting an entire turbo stystem together on my car (a 7MGTE, which is a toyota supra engine). For less than $800 dollars so far. Were as if I were to buy all the parts new, it would probably cost me over 2,000 bucks!
I agree w/mrmustang. You know what they say, you get what you pay for. If you cut corners you may want to carry a broom and shovel with you to pick up the pieces, Or, run a real small pulley on the bottom so boost is low... just for show.
yes i agree to i'm not debating whether to go cheap or not. I am looking for about 450-500 horse and am willing to spend the money wisely but i don't want to get it together and find out that 200 rolls of duct tape to strap me into the seat because it has 800+ horsepower. I want it to be reliable and am willing to spend the money! Maybe i'm going in the wrong direction with this supercharger thing but I think it's key! Maybe there is no in between it's either for show or all go baby theres no inbetween? can somebody clear this stuff up for me please?

OK, well, Blowers take time, money, and most of all, time to have your car down! Blowers take the money due to the instant increase in compression. Consider supercharging, Scoops, and ram-air. I especially like the Ram air. If you can find a good source of outside air, it supplies its own pressure. Also, it's cheap. Just a thought.

Uh, Me? I know! I'll take my litle 260 with 170K on the block, put a Mondello intake on it, edelbrock 350 heads and bolt up a blower! that should work-right?:LOL:
I personally wont touch a blower or a bottle at this point. Know why? I cant afford it! If you cant afford something, or its consequences, dont get it, use it or break it!
you dont need a blower, turbo, or a bottle to push 450hp out of a 327. if you use the right pieces and parts you'll be there without even realizing it.l
If you are looking for 450 reliable horsepower, just swap in a LS1, and an intake, a throttle assembly, a hot computer, a set of headers, etc., and drive around on pump gas.
You could get a low mileage engine from a salvage yard for around $2000-$2500, and after adding the above (including a stand alone harness for the computer), you'll have spent less than you would trying to stress out a 327 for the same power (with a blower no less). 4th gen Camaro's will run high 11's without much work with this engines.
As for the 396, I'd keep it all motor also. Stick to the KISS principle.
