SBC Which heads to use??

My wife fell in love w/the 63 post Belair I was going to BB. We made a trade on vehicles (she want's a new toy).Probobly for the best, the car will at least be kept relatively stock. What I've got: Very sound & clean #'s matching, 283 w/Performer intake,600 performer carb,fenderwell headers, 350Turbo w/308 gear. Stock cam & heads (power packs?).
Going to a roller 227/241 Dur 511 lift, one piece driveshaft & 355 or 373 rear.
What heads would flow better? What size chamber?1.94 intakes? NO VORTEC HEADS.
Was going to go with a set of 202's but was told to much flow. Never built a 283 was a 350 freak in the 70's.

i would look in to a set of iron eagle heads stay with the smaller 180 cc runners and chambers size 64 cc or so with the smaller cid engine you will need a smaller cc chamber to get it around 9to1 may need to trim the head to cut the ccs down i did not run the numbers

With your 283 short block being stock . Cast flat top pistons and stock rod bolts . I think the best heads for your build will be . The World S/R 305 Torquers . They have 58cc Chambers with 170cc intake runners . And run the 1.94in/1.50ex valves With screw in studs in-stalled . Some guy run the GM 305 heads #416 or #601 . But the GM heads more times then not are cracked . And if you find a good set they will need lot's of porting and screw in studs installed . They are 55cc to 58cc Chambers with stock 1.84in/1.50ex valves . As for a cam shaft to run . With that stock short block and your flat top C/R at around 9.25.1 . I would stay clear of the co$tly roller camshaft idea . I would run the Comp Cams XE262H Cam . This cam is a flat tappet hyd with 218/224 dur at .050 with 462/469 lift and has a 110 L/S . With your Performer intake and a 670 Holley Avenger carb and a good HEI . This 283 will run on Pump Gas and make a real 325 HP . And I am sure it will have a lot more low end Torque then with that big roller Cam . COOL

I have the ex 262h with rhodes lifters installed in a 310 with the 416 heads and it sounds pretty healthy :D
I have not run it on the track or street yet,but I am sure it will do well!!!
I am sure it will make 275 -300 hp pretty easy.........
I have heard about alot of the stock gm heads for these engines being cracked too.........the aftermarkett would be the way to go,they probably flow alot better too.

I Did hear Shawnlee28s Engine run . It sounds real strong . That one make's me re-Think the 305 Builds every time .

add some compression as in 11:-1 and use an old set of camel humps, yeah yeah everybody here tells guys to buy mucho dollar stuff and thats why a few have simply given up. if you know your machine shop and know other people usually they will let you make payments on work this is how i got my motor done.. if jegs did credit things would be differnt!

I got a set of 041's same as camel humps with screw in plates and studs also proted and polished, let me know if your interested. But they are 2.02 heads.

After some research Tango the head you advised is definitely the way to go, World S/R 42650 170 runner w/58cc chamber. May take them and have them flowed. Thinking of going with the 480 lift Crane Energizer w/228-228 duration cam reads more of a torque set-up, roller rockers, might bump another gear to a 373 and a small conveter if needed.

Of all the SB Chevy Energizer Camshafts . I like the 278H . That one is 222 dur at .050 and 467 Lift with a 110 L/S . This is a great street / strip Camshaft for the 283 to 350s .

467 lift is pretty radical for a stock 283 <easiest motor to overcam!> we used the 280-h in the 301! and it was pretty radical for the street., id go with the 262h or the 270 with the 305 heads it would work good. .511 is way to big for that motor.. i think unless you going to bore it, use the heads tango said <305's> and use the 262h comp cams or an equivilant. .202valves are to big for a 283 unless its got some compression and etc. id use the 1.94's
