Tango, yes there are other combos that would work too. It's just that the #11 fills the bill at 9.15:1 so that you could run junk pump gas with the aluminum heads and tight squish and the fact that it makes max torque at 3,500 rpm's. To my way of thinkin', it's the ultimate street-friendly motor.
Scooter, you'd be down 100 ft/lbs or more with camel hump heads. In my opinion, GO BIG OR GO HOME. :LOL: Look at some of the other combos using different heads. No comparison to the superiority of the AFR heads.
Well, let me know when you get a set of cast iron factory smogger engine heads to outperform a set of state of the art AFR heads!!!!! Doubter that I am, guess I'd prefer to see the flow bench data instead of some "once upon a time" street racing stories though...
When I want parts that are a bit more money then I can afford to spend I either have to wait longer or work harder to get the money to buy them.... Never have understood the "gotta have it now" mentality.....whatever happened to patience???? I don't see any reason to settle for something less then what you really want to have... Saying they're too expensive is just an excuse, not a reason....
I agree wholeheartedly Dave. When I was buying parts for the T, my budget was $50 per week. I wanted Aldan Eagle coilovers for the front IFS and wouldn't settle for any less. They were $500, so I had to wait 10 weeks to get them. But man oh man, when you get those extreme quality pieces in your hand, it sure puts a grin on your face. :)Quote:

sometimes we settle for what is good enuff .. people ask why i still have ported old iron heads on my 429 when there are many good aftermarket aluminum heads out now .. i just dont think 50 hp is worth 2500 bucks .. but a class racer " pro stock - nascar - etc .. would give that any day for 5 hp ...
:LOL: :LOL: Them Pro Stock boys probably spend a mil during the off season trying to find another 5 horse!!!!! Since Ford came out with the SCJ-John Kasse heads, the outdated CJ heads are going for cheap...when you can find a set.... Scored a set of them that were fresh and had been on a spare motor for one of the big boys when there team updated.....The guy I got them from said they had updated their heads with a net gain in hp of 7!!!!! I just smiled and took my $700 set of "outdated" heads home!!!!:LOL: :LOL: The pro racers really operate on a whole different planet then the rest of us!!!!!!Quote:

They're on the Comet drag car.... If I could find a set then we would sell the Edelbrock's if they would do someone any good.... They are excellent heads, but would probably be better on a big horse street engine, not quite up to the task for racing, we still need another 1/10 on the T-Bird......

What else you looking for? Might be some stuff around here......
the price of heads keep going down .how good are they ? the patriot performance heads for as-cast are 460.a pair .so why would you play with heads that are old casting that could be well used ? i have got in to this before**) i have a machine shop would be happy to reguide put new seats in .cut out for bigger valves. mill and do a 3 angle valve job on a old worn out set of heads .now the new head s could need a tune in on all the stuff i listed but still your getting a better flowing head .i still think your going to have more in old gm casting then a new set it is a time and money thing. if your time is worth nothing then stones sand paper and other supplys will add up . you still will have to cart them off to the machine shop .when done you have a old out dated heads that could flow not any better then they did stock with a very good valve job i still think this is were alot of power is on how the seat is formed and the valve flows and the short side radius of the port along with the chamber and how it much it shrouds the valve
