quick question on carb decision?

alright i got a quadrajet that i think the floats are stuck on and am contemplating rebuild.. OR there's a brand new holley 600cfm manual choke with a spread bore adapter for 270$$?? which route should i take? they're both 600 cfm's but which one is going to keep me the most happy!! ?? haha this is going on a chevy small block 355 mild cam and edelbrock intake. elevation 5,500 feet and going to only be driving on the road and maybe towing on occasion so any suggestions would be very very very much appreciated!! thanks ahead of time!

I will disagree,if you are not experienced with rebuilding carbs stay away from the Q-Jet, if you can find one that is in good working order then use it.The Holley is much more "user friendly" and parts availablity is much better and tuning it is much easier.If the Edelbrock intake is a 2101 Performer the only "adapter" you should use is the Edelbrock EDL-2732 base gasket,the aftermarket adapters that are made of pot metal and have the offset holes disrupt flow and should not be used.I really cannot understand why folks on the boards would tell you to use the Q-Jet:confused:I buy and sell used carbs to have "play money" for my project, the Holleys,AFB's and Edelbrocks usually sell within days Q-jets you almost can't give away! check ebay for Q-Jets almost zero bidding on them or dirt cheap,what does that tell you?

tells me that not to many know much . for mild to stock use the Qjet are just fine parts may be harder to find . guys have got in the low 10s with a Qjets. yep Q jets are junk what s why they used the in boats merc could of used any carb but used Q jets in all there boat engine up to 330 hp :) i can make them all work i like the holley 4500 thats about it from holley

Qjets are great carbs when overhauled correctly. By this I mean acid dipped and all passages, transfer slots, ect. cleaned out. Do your darnedest to find a AC Delco carb kit. It must be adjusted correctly, not only the air-fuel needle bleeds screws at the base, but the tension on the secondary venturis. If they open too soon (light tension) it will bog, If hard to open ( heavy tension ) then the secondaries are late and useless. If it is a CCC carb, the the metering rod dwell must be set correctly also. Find you a good Qjet builder ( somebody at a local car show or club will know one).

thanks for the comment about how difficult it would be to set one up correctly.. i just decided to take it to someone who had a Q-jet on his old 427 camaro and according to everyone in town that car could run!! .. he owns a shop and says he's done 100's of these so he did the rebuild now it sounds like its going to be another trip back to him to let him tune it! hahaha! the only time i can get it to run is when i advance the crap out of the timing... i've tried retarding the timing and tightening both of the air/fuel mixture screws and then it starts to backfire?! no backfire when i advance it. and also when i just hold the gas pedal constantly at 1/4 throttle it will eventually sputter and die after 3 or 4 seconds of doing that... any ideas???

How many floats are in YOUR Q-jet?!!!!
