Hey guys, I recently decided to build up a new 327 for my vette with the goal of 425HP (I know thats a tall order). Im looking for some wisdom and knowledge on what all I need to do to make this happen. ANY suggestions on cranks, heads, cam, pistons, intake, compression ratio....anything really. It would be a GREAT help to me.

Clean up bore, good machine work, aluminum heads 10.5-1 compression, balance, hydraulic roller with 272/282 duration (seat to seat) and .510/.520 lift should do it.

Its pretty do-able, but you need to decide if you can live with a "peaky" engine that makes all its power up at the top of the rev range or if you want it down low where street cars get driven the most. If the power is at the top of the rev range it will probably be a dog down low.
Or you can fit up a supercharger and have a torque curve that will put a huge smile on your face
I would have to suggest that you do a roller block stroker deal to 383/396---parts will cost about the same as the parts to make that horse power out of 327 and you can benefit from more modern cams/rollers----
Thanks guys! I know its gonna be a little on the expensive side, but I think it'll be worth every penny. I dont think im gonna go down the supercharger route, but that would be pretty cool haha. Right now I have an Edelbrock Performer intake on it and the air cleaner barely clears the Big Block hood I have on the Vette. So I cant get a taller intake, but does any of you know of an intake that just flows better without going any taller?

AFR 180 heads, solid lifter cam, forged rotating assembly, and port match your Performer intake to the heads. With a camshaft large enough to get that kind of hp, you are going to be reving the engine to 7000 rpm to reach those power levels, and it will not be very street friendly. It would be a lot easier and much less expensive to accomplish those numbers with a 383. But if your heart is set on a 327, more power to ya!
Build a 383 stroker!
+ 1 for building a new one, especially if your 327 is still running ok; that way you will still have the car to drive, and can take your time on the build and not feel pressured to get it done, and cut corners. Besides, you are going to have to buy new parts all the way through, and machining will cost the same; you'll have a better and easier result, and still can keep it manageable for the street. I had a '64 roadster with a 365 horse, 327 in it, that was the factory engine with a solid lifter, lumpy cam, 11:1 compression, and high rise manifold with a Holley on it; it was streetable, marginally so, but it was also very touchy, even grouchy (like me), and I had to keep on top of the tune and valve lash, or it would really get cranky. You can definitely get more out of a 327, but like somebody said once upon a time, all it takes is cubic money; in this case the money will be pretty much the same either way - rebuild the 327, or go for a 350/383, and I imagine, in the long run, you'd be much happier with the larger build. Another thing to think about: if your 327 is the original engine, even if the manifold has been replaced, or a new cam, it is restorable. NOS cams, manifold (NOS or used), and other correct parts are available; if you ever wanted to restore the car to original, numbers matching, that is a big step in that direction; just store the 327 for a rainy day. I imagine a correctly restored '64 would see a value gain of at least double over what it would be with the hot rodded stuff in it.

4 speed car? Go for the 327. Crank is probably forged. Aluminum heads. Roller cam. Its just a smaller 383. Except a will be a screamer.
There is no substitute for cubic inches, I agree with those that suggested going with the 383. It's gonna look the same as a 327, you could even put the 327 stickers on it and who's to know, except you? You can get all that good power and torque and have a much more enjoyable car to drive. You say you want to build a 327 and of course you are going to get 40-11 people telling you to build a 383. Don't believe the hype, a 327 is an awesome motor, you will not need to do as much to get 425hp (or more!!) as people would like you to believe. I think you will be glad you did! 327 motors are great imo!
I run a 327 with 10:1 pistons, Comp 280/480 cam, vortec heads, beehive springs, Edlebrock intake, 750, headers and is still shy of 400 hp. Very streetable but a 383 in an El Camino just walked away from me at a light. I am building a 496 BBC and there will be no more loosing! I say build the 383, no replacement for displacement!!!
Anyone who says it's easy to build a streetable 327 with 425 hp in a Corvette hasn't built too many motors. Not only is it not feasible, it's just silly. A good high-rise, dual-plane intake such as a Edelbrock RPM or Weiand Stealth alone is worth 40 hp and you can't get one to fit under the stock 'vette hood. So, if you have to use a low-rise intake, you'll have to go bigger on the inches. I'd be on the lookout for a stock bore 400 block.
Disassemble the 327, oil everything and wrap it in plastic, then squirrel all of it away for a later sale to someone who wants the gennie mill with the car.
Do you remember when stock a 327 came with 375 HP. Surely we can get 50 more HP. If I were going to build a motor just to win a race, It wouldn't be a 383. He wanted to build a 327. 7000 rpm hole shots were fun when I was younger.

Fred, if you are stuck on the 327, just hook up a 125 shot of juice to it. Done.
We do lots of builds with the later roller blocks and also many using the Dart SHP block and a 3.875 stroke/4.125 bore 6 inch rod for 414 cid---with some Dart or AFR heads makes lots of streetable power
The way they measured horsepower back in 1965 when they rated that 327 fuelie engine at 375 hp is different than the way horsepower is measured now. By today's standards of measurement, that 375 hp 327 would probably be closer to 350 hp.
I do remember 103 octane at the local gas station. You could run a couple of different mock ups on your desk dyno and see what you come up with. And I did have a 327 as a kid with 11:1 - 2x4's- 292-302 dur. solid cam .512 lift and manual trans. Lots of fun. 4 miles to a gallon. lots of broken parts.Quote:

For the money you will spend to build and maintain that 327 ,including all the broken parts from 7k hole shots and the like you could build a 454 smallblock with the 327 valve cover stickers and have a winner !

If you do build the 327 have fun and keep us posted with how that goes...I am sure everyone here will be more than glad to help with thier exsperiance and help you put together a screamer.......they are just letting you know things wear and break often at those numbers you are looking at and its not cheap to do either.
Basically to sum it up ...thats not the most economicall way to get that hp, nor is it the most reliable.

wow you guys are at it again,
take that 327 punch it .060 run 11:5-1 with a nice solid cam i know its old fashioned but it quite frankly works, use the offroad z cam .493 .512 and a good set of heads, you get get a cheap set of bare procomps have them all set up and fixed. or if youve got a set of camel humps laying around use them.
horsepower and torque are just a number if it does what you want it to do and run the number who cares what it has.
the combo i sent you would probably have 4-425 horse if it was built right and balanced n blueprinted.
if i can run 13:1 go down to joes corner store fill it up with 92 and some octane booster from a bottle and drive around with iron heads you shouldnt have a problem.
you can still buy the 100 or 103 what ever it is up the road from me at a chevron station. It is in the $8.00 a gallon range.
My two cents is you can get as much hp out of it as the amount of money you want to spend.Oh,by the way..............Anyone want to venture a guess at what rpm range that peak hp is going to happen??.Yeah,your going to buzz that 327 up.
Tell you what.One of my pet peeves is questions of hp on street driven vehicles.
Seriously,what segment of that rating do you really get to use on a daily basis?
If I am going to spend my hard earned dollars,I want to be able to feel the effects of that investment every time I drive it.
So it is deductive logic on all the posts before this one.The wise money is in fact spent on stroker 350 or World sbc.Why??.Well from my way of thinking,they create torque which is tons more valuable than hp on street vehicles.
Got to figure if you build a small c.i.sbc for hp,each time you drive it on the street,you get about a 1/3 return on that investment on the basis of what you really feel from the mod.To me,that is a waste of money when you have so many other choices.

Old school???.Well in a week I am going to be 63 yrs old.I owned a B/MP 57 Chevy with a 327 at one time.I have over the yrs watched the SBC evolve.Much of what you see today is the end result of solving problems that went on for yrs.Point being not to take a advantage of that development just for the sake of fond memories is a total waste.Quote:

yes thats true about the technology thing,
but i hate 383's i see them at the track and they do not perform as well as a normal 350. some do but most do not. IMHO they make a great truck motor but just not my cup of tea for a hot rod.
there is something to be said about cube's why not build a 400???????? or a wicked 434
my next race car motor will end up being a 377 when i get to build a new one.
of course if he still wants to build a 283-302-327 i will help him best i can, and BTW modified production was one of the best classes nhra ever had, period.
i am at the moment prepping a 355 13:5-1 6 inch rod motor to drop into my nova. never ran a 350 before so we will see what happens. but if i do not get what i want i am definatley yanking it out in favor of the 302 to go back in. we will find out here in a week or two.
