Machining Cost? 400sbc
Hey guys, I have a 400 sbc with a high rise manifold, headers, 1406 carb, runs nice, but i am wondering what a ballpark figure is for having it machined to a 406 including labor and pistons? I did have a 305 in this truck (1985 SWB) and dropped this one in with no problems. I'm getting pricing all over the place. I can pull and put the motor in myself. Thanks!

If the engine runs well, (doesn't burn oil, has good oil pressure, good compression etc) why do you want to bore it for oversize pistons?

my price is not going to work . my price on machine and parts is only good if you live in MI or you going to pay for shipping your block ? so it going to be what the machine shop needs to get in TX .every one works off diffrent price .i work off my shop list pricing i get $25 a hole to bore with deck plates

If it runs good just leave it alone. 6 cubic inches isn't going to get you any increase in performance.

The engine had a "upper overhaul" I have one piston that slaps around when cold but is not really noticeable when warms up and expands. I understand this was normal I just didn't want to throw a rod and damage the block. I'm sure it has alot of good miles in it, I'm just reminded of it when I start it cold.

bore it put some cast pistons in it should not be bad 140 for pistons or less. 200 to bore the block cam bearing should not be to bad about 340 for block boil . plugs cam brearings bore and hone just machine work only but i like to deck all blocks with the BHJ tru -deck. i have master kits made for my builds so the price gets much better on mild to stock OEM stuff

Does it have forged pistons? They are a little noisy when cold.

I'd put a little STP Oil Treatment in the motor oil and run it. I got an extra year out of a Ford six that was rattling in the main bearings that way.
