tech thats was an awesome response thank you for that defiantly a lot of knowledge i will be returning to and using
the reason i cannot get the numbers off the block is because i do not have it it is at the machine shop waiting for me to give the go ahead i can tell you this i pulled flat tappet lifters out of the block and the cam is downstairs
as i have been doing some research i would need the part that bolts into the block galley that holds the lifters straight....but if it wasnt a roller wouldnt the block not have that hole? would i be able to drill and tap the hole myself? other then that i would have to buy retro lifters that every two are connected u would have to purchase shorter rods too
My 1988 5.7 Block has the thread bosses and holes for the Roller Hardware but came with a Flat Tappet Camshaft . If your going with a roller Cam now then you should be ok with the springs that are on them heads . Best to take one off and check it's Lbs at install height .
As for them Block Casting #s . Call the Engine Shop up they can tell you . But should not make a big difference they have 5.0 or 5.7 right on them .

i do know its a 5.7 if thats what you guys were asking for thats no problem but i have a good feeling its like an 86 block which wouldnt be a roller
If it's at the machine shop pick up the phone and ask them if it's a OEM Roller Block . I have seen some one Piece Real Main Seal Blocks marked 5.0L or 5.7L that were not Roller Blocks but not to many .
Tango I think that its great,the work you and thousands of other diesel truck mechanics do everyday to keep freight going to all parts of this great country.I wish you the best of luck trying to beat Mr.McCarthy in a street race.I've been trying for years.I'm a dye in the wool small block man.I built many small blocks,mostly big inch small blocks and spent a lot of money.But Mr McCarthy always out cubed me and out drove me.This guy is a from womb to tomb gearhead.I wish you the best of luck,and where ever this race takes place I will be there.I know who I will be putting my money on.Maybe you can do something with nitrious and twin turbos.But if you'r not making 1000 HP you might as well stay home.Again I wish you the best of luck.
Yeah-some of the blocks had the bosses casted in them for a roller cam and where not tapped.None the less-it is still possible with a conversion kit and well worth spending the money on it.In my mind,that is doing it right the first time and my 383 will have a roller in it.But that is a 1996 block for my 1989 cargo Astro van which has the holes tapped for it.Weird yrs because it had it tapped,but stock was a flat tappet.Comp cams has a fix for the weaker stock roller lifter retainers which allow a higher rpm.They suggest you don't go beyond I think it was 5,500 with the stock stuff.
