Before the 1970s there were no set standards for determining the competence of automotive mechanics. The non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence was established to remedy this situation and provide a way for consumers to evaluate a mechanic's ability.

How ever, many people display that sign for all types of repair, and they are not certified in all the fields that they clam. A little misleading to the unexpected person. Taking a test is not the same as being a competent mechanic. You have to earn the right to display that, not just passing the tests. I know many people that are good on paper, but that's it. :LOL:
Applicants for ASE certification must pass a written test and demonstrate at least two years of experience in their chosen automotive field. Upon successful completion, applicants are certified. Certification is not permanent and must be reaffirmed through retesting every five years.
