fuel problem
:confused:I have 1990 rs camaro, 400 small block engine built by someone other than me.
I had my carb replaced with a 600 holly, now all can smell is gas and I cant adjust the carb or even adjust the idle. I see black smoke when start the engine. I believe the engine is bored to 40 over, cam over 500 lift. carb sits on a mid alumnium intake, I know nothing of the heads. Im thinking too much carb for not enough engine, anyone have a solution?

carb size sounds right. it also sounds like you are getting too much fuel to the carb. you might want to put in a fuel regulator. i am sure that someone here with more knowledge will come along and tell you what the fuel pressure should be.

Was the carb used? If so, I would suspect a blown power valve. Another possibility is a stuck float or an improperly adjusted float. Did you check the site glass to determine if the float level is correct?

Like Lynn's angle, was this a new carb installed by a reputable shop or something you picked up from a buddy? Lots of guys out there who sell their used stuff to friends, but don't know enough to make them right.

You could provide more details or find out more about what you own so we could really help.
Does it have Corvette valve covers??::rolleyes::confused::LOL::LOL:

if you have enuff car knowledge to safely restrict/stop the flow of fuel to the carb do so. run it and it should clear up before it dies indicating a flooding condition which you`d need to address ..

I'm pretty much of the same mind as the above replies. The 600 CFM should be fine on this engine however; sounds like too much fuel.
If you know this to be a "good" carb (as mentioned above) - try the following:
Get a a fuel gauge/regulator and set it at 5 PSI. Set your idle mixture screws at 1-1/2 turns out from bottom.
If that doesn't help, you may have float issues or (if fuel pressure has been too high) a blown PV or perhaps a bad seat on the needle valve that controls fuel intake - either of which will require a bit of carb savvy to address. The manual would be a good thing to have before you jump in here.
Do you know the model of the carb?
Keep the information flowing and we'll help you get it fixed!
Regards,
Glenn
