$$$ for Marine vinyl on a '32 Ford seat???

....I was reading a post on here about what is a good durable appolstery for a Roadster & even though I have a coupe I was thinking that Marine Vinyl would be the way to go. I really like the look & feel of leather & this looks like it'll fit the bill. Does anyone have a rough idea what it should cost to do just the seat in my '32 Ford??? {Wise Guys seat & padding}... THANKS ;0 Bill

ps, I went to the Wise Guys web site & they charge $800 more for a vinyl appolstered seat verus a bare seat w/ foam. So I guess this would be a rough estimate???

I would suggest calling a local trim shop that does cars and boats, and asking them how much if any difference in price.

Part of my job when I was in the marine business was ordering interiors for boats that had been storm damaged, etc. and it always surprised me how much even simple cushions would cost. (The customers were even more surprised :eek: ) But I suspect lots of that markup was from the boat manufacturer simply charging a ridiculous figure, and not necessarily because of the added cost of the vinyl.

What makes marine grade vinyl different from regular vinyl is that it is generally a little heavier, more resistant to abrasion and moisture, the colors are more UV stabilized (less prone to fading in the sun) and in some cases fire retardant to meet Coast Guard regs. Mildew resistance is also better than regular vinyl.

I did the interior of my '27 twice over the years with marine grade stuff, and it is usually thicker and harder to sew. My ex-Girlfriend did the last interior, and she commented that her machine had a tough time getting through it.

Another benefit is that it can be more resistant to oils and stains. Suntan oil is one reason they do that. In a car, especially a coupe, these benefits may not be really all that beneficial, but it wouldn't hurt to use it.

Oh, there are two kinds of foam too. Open cell, which is the most common you see, and the more expensive closed cell. Open cell sucks up water like a sponge, and holds it, whereas closed cell does not. In a roadster I like closed cell, even though it is somewhat stiffer to sit on.

That would have been one of the LESSER reasons. :LOL: :LOL: No, I actually kid about her, but fact is, she is a great lady. and was really good to me. Just didn't have time for hot rods and her at the same time. :o :o Something had to go.

I just had my Glide bench seat for my '32 covered in marine vinyl. I was stunned when I saw the bill for $750. I even supplied the foam. Shop around.........

I also have a Glide seat in my '32 and upholstery bill was $800 by the time it was all said and done. But he supplied all the materials and I know he had a lot of hours in it. That seemed like a lot at the time, but it rides great and the workmanship was excellent. I did most of the rest of the interior myself so the outlay for the seat was well worth it. The total bill for my coupe's interior and trunk was around $2000.00. Closed cell foam, good quality vinyl and spray adhesives add up in a hurry. But I figured I saved myself $1000.00 doing it myself.
