Thread: Rear License Plate Mount?

Guys, the 32 I got does not have a pre-drilled place on the rear panel for the plate. I see speedway has those nice holder devices that mount on the front or rear cross bar inbetween the frame rails. I can do this on the front, but my rear round bar between the frame runs super close to the gas tank thus not enough room.

What are my options to mount the rear plate? I really like these from Speedway but there doesn't look like there is enough room to fit it between the chrome frame rod and the gas tank.........See below picture.

By the way, you guys asked if I had pics last week. Here is the car I just got!

Motor coming out and going with all new blown 350/383. Interior will be started from scratch. Going to run 325/50/15 or 29x15.5x15 years with 4.5 backspace. Would like to see pics if anyone is running them now!

Measure the distance between tank and spreader bar, phone Speedway and ask how thick the cap for the plate holder is.

If it's a touch thick, you can cut it thinner with file or belt sander.
It doesn't have to be real strong.

I've always had good luck talking to the guys at Speedway when I had similar questions.

I actually made my own license plate holder, outta stainless exhaust clamps. I was limited to room as well, I just welded a few filler pieces in and they almost look store bought. Polished them up, and I was in business.

Back when the roadsters and coupe started going up to the dry lakes to race, they removed the fenders and stuff to go faster. The stock tail lights on a 32 were a pain to remove and reinstall so many of the racers ... installed the newest, good looking available tail light available. The 38/39 Ford tail lights were installed in the rear body panel. They did the same with the license tag. It has been fairly accepted as the way it was done ... since the 40's. My old roadster was a Los Angeles California car in the late 30's and had the 38/39 tail lights installed before WWII. The same for the license tag ... I like them that way ... and they will remain that way as long as I own the roadster ( 30 years so far )

The tag light is a newer addition and 12Volts. It is a A/C Cobra part ... and puts out a lot of light. It has two small bulbs.

Mine is done same as Deuce.

Drilled holes & installed rivnuts. Use rubber washers to space it from the paint.

If you use the common GM license tag retainer ... you do not need to space the tag out off the paint

I think the look on the rear panel looks the cleanest. I take it I can buy riv nuts at lowes or Menards? Or the the GM license plate things at an auto parts store?

Well hello there Deuce! I see Mrs Deuce is making some progress. Looks good.

Great picture.....the deuce meet in the 40's. I really like the old stuff the best.

I'm with Ken....really like the frenched mounts....but on the deuce's I'd probably go with a external mount....depend on how its built. Seems for some reason.....I like em all.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I went to Lowe's and in the bolt drawer section they have those little plastic square or round spacers for license plates that fit 1/2" bolts. They don't call them license plate thingy's but they are the same thing.

Bougt me this off Ebay and I should be set! The plate frame is upside down in the photo....
