What kinda mufflers do you guys run?

I have Thrush glasspacks on my coupe. They look and sound like the Cherry Bombs I used to get back in the '70's & '80's. At first I had 3 1/2 in pipes from the mufflers out the back:eek: , but the resonance was deafening at 40 mph and above.:mad: I chopped those off and put 2 1/4 inch pipes out the back. It still sounds fine outside, but not noisy inside any more.:3dSMILE:

I agree, Flowmasters just don't have the sound that works on a traditional hotrod. I like the sound of them, but on muscle cars & more modern stuff.;)

Lotsa places sell Smithy Glasspacks (Not Smittys). I did a Google search for ya:

The engine has a pretty stout cam ;) so i`m looking forward to hearing it thru the smittys

I have the big Flow Master Delta 50's on my AVATAR car. They have only about an hour on them and seem to be too quiet - but since I do plan on day and week tripping with this car need to wait and see. But then, I feel the Ford SVT -E cam is too 'soft' as well. Again, wait and see:D

I run cherry bombs with the fiberglass all burned out. Real nice and loud:)

Absolute best pipes I've ever had, very mellow and little restriction, was a pair of Lobak mufflers welded to the collectors, then way in the back a pair of cheapy turbo mufflers from Summit!!!! This is a pic of the Lobak muffler, 3 1/2" inlet, 3 1/2" outlet.....

3" pipes leading to 50 series Flowmasters and 3" out.

Got a question: Does the round style muflers like Dynomax Ultra Flow's, Magnaflow's, Dynatech's, and Flowmaster Outlaws sound more like a turbo or are they a straight shot like a glass pack? I'm wanting to set my mufflers between the running boards and frame. Plenty of room for a 6" round case. I prefer the deep turbo sound....the glass packs make the hair stand out on the back of my head. :LOL::LOL:

This is an 'A' chassis with the big Delta Flow 50 Flow Master installed and everything is out of sight including the 'H' pipe. Fairly quiet but they have only an hour or so on them so far.

Well it would appear that there are some rather strong opinions on the muffler question! That’s what makes hot roddin’ so special – there is rarely “one right answer” when the question involves a matter of taste and preference. Any free flowing system will probably perform about the same if the pipe is sized correctly.

I have to agree with the above comments, re: make the sound fit the era of the car. I had Smitty’s on my ’57 Corvette and they sounded mighty fine back in the sixties. I lived in a small town in the mountains of Southern California and one night a friend encouraged me to try a little trick he’d learned from his brother. As he explained it, you find a nice long downhill grade, get a bit of speed up, turn the ignition off and pump the gas a few times and then turn the ignition back on, and a “big back fire” will ensue. Well sure enough – there was a big backfire and two red hot cores clanked out the tail pipe. The Smitty’s were – needless to say – not quite the same and as I drove into the driveway, my father informed me that the sheriff had called and already shared the details of my little stunt. The fear of God was further underscored as I was lambasted for potentially starting a forest fire. The Smitty’s got replaced with Cherry Bombs and I was instructed that a reoccurrence of my shenanigans would result in a loss of my driving privileges.

We have a local shop that gives a lifetime guarantee on the Dynomax. I like the sound of Flowmaster 40/50 series on the newer cars and they comply with most noise ordinances. Depending on where you are, the local “authority having jurisdiction” can put a damper on how loud you can go – I have Hooker Straight Shots on my Harley and was informed that to avoid a ticket, I would have to install the baffles - still good sound, but not quite the bite of a V-Twin with open pipes.

I got a HUGE pair of flowmasters on the firebird, they scrape on everything, and sound great. Running Dynomax turbos on the truck, don't really like them. Makes the cab reverberate.

I used Supertrapps down the side of my car, like a tbucket style. I wanted flowmasters but I had no room under the car. Anybody have any videos of supertrapps , besides a 4 banger with them on? Need to hear a bbc:D

I like Smithys, the sound is perfect for an early car.

Two year old post and still going.....what the heck, I plan on putting in Flowmasters too!
