Engine temp problem? Or not?
Some history.
ZZ430 motor, 180 stock stat (restrictive), no spring in bottom hose, Walker 4 core radiator (newly freshened up), electric 16" Spal 2370 cfm fan (new & much more power). Comes on at 180, off at 160.
Car always ran at 190
Changed all the stuff because I want to be ready for summer & driving.
Changed upper & lower hose (with spring this time) & removed the 10 yr old thermostat & installed a new high flow thermostat. I was surprised to see a 180 stat in there w/ car running 190, even on a cold day- I would have sworn it was a 195 in there, based on temps.
Normally if I started the car in garage & let it come to temp, it would sit in the 185/190 range, fan would come on & not shut off. Temp was A-ok.
Now I fire up the car & let it come up to temp. Comes up to about 175-180 & stays, fan comes on, temp drops to 160, fan back off. Does this repeatedly. On-Off-On-Off. Drops fast when fan comes on. I have no idea of brand or CFM of old fan.
I drive the car. Temp swinging between 180 & 165 on side roads. On freeway, hits just below 180 & stays, fan is off due to speed of car.
I thought thermostat might be bad so I swapped it out for another new one- a different brand this time. 1st one was Stant, second was Mr. Gasket.
Same exact thing. Both are high flow & opening area is huge compared to the stock one.
Both new & stock were 180 degree stats.
Problem or am I worrying about nothing?
BTW- It's only in the 70's here now.
On freeway at speed- temp is 180- right at thermostat temperature. Around town- lower.
Too much fan? Too much radiator? Too much thermostat flow?
Or should I shut up & drive?Last edited by Steves32; 06-14-2009 at 06:45 PM.
Several years ago we did quite a good trip of USA, and on our trip we got to meet Mike and Christine Frade. We didn't stay long with them, but in that relatively short time we both gained a great...
