Tranny options

I started pricing some transmission options for the Ranchero..... Seeing as how I haven't had much luck with Toploaders behind a 600+ ft.lbs. torque big block Fords I started checking out some options........

Jericho DL4-the standard 4 speed like the NASCAR and road race guys use. David Kee offers it at $3,469 including caged needle rear bearing, billet yoke, and a Long V-gate shifter

Jericho CL4, like the DL4, only clutchless shifting. Same options as the CL4 the price is $3,845.

Lenco 4 speed with shifter is $4,900, the Lenco 5 speed is $5,900 with shifter.

Before you say it, yes I know I should run a 'glide, but I still like pulling the handle, or in the Lenco's case, the handles. My old Doug Nash 5 speed may not be up to the task, right on the limits of torque handling capability.....Plus the poor thing probably has 700 passes on it over the years. I would sure like some input from some of you guys to bring up some of the things I haven't though of before I make a decision.

Good idea Tech. A bit concerned about the torque handling capability, virtual engine dyno shows torque at 640!!! Would be real close to the max, not sure how long it would live????? What do you think?????

The T-56 sounds good, but it sounds more like to me that you the need the real Big Block transmission, the venerable M-22 rock crusher used most typically by CHEVY ;)

this was as close i ever got to a Lenco DAVE, but i sure loved that shifter. cant buy them anymore either i dont think.

I checked with Liberty, they're trans is a bit higher than the Jericho.

I got to quit looking at them Lenco pictures!!!!! I called the guys at Jericho today. They recomended the CL4 and V-Gate shifter with a McCleod Soft Lok Clutch and aluminum flywheel!!!!! Clutch is similar to a Pro Stock, has adjustable springs and counterweights........

A lot of work. Put all that alum. in that wagon with nothing but hammers, pliers, tin snips and a rivet gun. I had a 14" brake I used for some little stuff.the chassis was a pinto clip, 2x3 and roll bar. i did have a pipe bending machine. :HMMM: :CRY:

i can get you that same tranny as m-22.com for $1695 out the door here at a local shop!!!!!!

It does make for a good trans, Denny. No doubt about it. But with big slicks and steep gears a top loader just won't live long at 600 plus ft. lbs. torque. And usually when a part breaks, it's in the final round when the $$$$ is on the line.

The Top loaders and Muncies are fine on the street, they just won't last round after round of drag racing with the big torque numbers.

Dave, sorry to get involved in your thread, but are there options that will handle it for less than the prices noted above? Are these just the top o' the line trannies or is this about as cheap as you can get for track/street?

No, there's a lot of cheaper alternatives. I will (hopefully) be putting out about 625 ft. lbs of torque, anything less then the best in a tranny is just going to disintegrate.

Next motor, after a season with the engine I'm putting together now, will be a 514 with a BDS 10 71 Blower. These trannies are all rated for torque in excess of 1,000 ft. lbs. A big inch motor with a blower can exceed 900 ft lbs. torque. No use buying a less expensive trans now, then next year buy the good one....... Well, at least it makes sense to me !!!!!!!!
