WOW! what a fantastic time you must have had. To be related to the dutchman gives you the ultimate bragging rights.

I remember watching a guy who was called The 'Flying Dutchman' run out at my hometown dragstrip in Santa Maria, Ca. back in the mid 60's.
If I remember right his name was Al Voonder 'sp?'.
And at the time he was running a black dodge dart funny car, with 3/4 of the roof cut off.....and just part of the roof was left where the rear window would be. Is this the same guy?
I use to go into the pits and talk to him, whenever he was running out there.
He was a real nice guy....always had time to talk and explane, and show you his car.

yes it is the same guy, its Al Vanderwoude. he was one of the original pioneers of funny cars, he experimented in a lot of areas others would not touch. chassis, susspension, body's etc. he always had something different than everyone else had. pictured is the car you mention, but it is grren in this photo, and then a photo of Al as you would see him at the track, happy.

Yup......that's the guy..and the car!! He was a real nice guy. Is he still alive?
That car ran pretty strong, for the messed up old Army airstrip that we had as a dragstrip.
But, that never stopped anyone.......we had all the biggies running out there!!

hey i found this pic thought you might want it, its the flying dutchman maverick at lakeland dragway in tennesse

thanks for the picture, gassersrule. did you find this on the net or do you own it? i am trying to find any sour grapes, flying dutchman pictures i can get. my dad drove the maverick also. it is the chassis from the charger 3 rebodied to the maverick. the charger 3 body was removed because it was not stable at top speed. again thanks for the picture!

found it just thought id post it for you, was looking around at a 2 lane blacktop movie fan page and they had it in there under the lakeland dragway pics.
