I sat and watched as a good buddy and high school classmate lost his life in a wreck just like that. His name was Ted Arnold and he was driving for Vance Hunt. It happened at the old Green Valley Dragway in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ted was the great guy NOBODY ever said anything bad about. We were all terribly shocked, but what it did to Vance was many times worse. I'm sure it still haunts him. I had lunch with him yesterday but I sure didn't bring that subject up.
Vance eventually returned to racing (very successfully), but still ......
Granted, I'm talking 40+ years ago, but any time our old roadster broke ten seconds was cause for a huge celebration and satisfied my go-fast needs.

Ah yes, the hot car gate and a fire in front of you with no way to get away from it and no firewall sealing off the driver's compartment..... We certainly have progressed a lot since then...
well they still race them in goodguys and are doing some nice et's so they cant all be dead ! theres alot of old meets and assoc's for fed's id love to hop in a 1969 era car and make a pass. its just like any racing its not a safe sport then and its still not its just not as dangerous. but racing is dangerous.
How hot is a 150 mph blowtorch wind..............it looks like 95 percent of the heat and fire went directly at him :CRY: probably could not see anything..........

Racing a car built to 1969 standards is not as safe as racing a car built to today's standards..... The good old days weren't as good as some would have you believe.... Life was simpler, sure... With today's performance potential in yesterday's cars, the safety level declines. Go ahead and find your FED.... They aren't cheap and campaigning one of them would easily double what your present car costs you.... The big meets are few and far between so add a bunch of $$$$$ for travel, and of course when you're on the road don't forget to take along lots of spare part$!!!!!!
The majority of the safety updates are there for a reason....Usually takes someone getting hurt to mandate a change in rules.... Ask John Force which is better....
i would be taking baby steps anyway, start with an injected sbc and move up. a-fuel <injected not blown, goodguys racing series style cars> cars run lots of nitro and rarely break parts because they dont twist the rpms and dont have huffers stressing the blocks as bad. besides dave you know me, i dont use modern motor technology :eek: :LOL: and you can run exhibition :D u can find rollers for under 10 k all the time add a motor go race !

Well, eventually you will figure out that it takes quality aftermarket parts to live and be consistent in a drag car.... One quick pass followed by parts failure in the next won't get you to go a lot of rounds and going rounds is what it's all about. Racing on a budget is fine, we all do it to a varying extent.... The novelty of running small inch motors with old parts will fade away after a number of one round and out (or broke) sessions.... As I've said so many times, fast doesn't mean a dang thing if you can't back it up round after round after round and it takes good parts to do it....Quote:

I agree that most safety upgrade rules have been written with some bodies blood---the same goes for aviation, trucking, industry in general
In the days of FED racing, generally when smoke/oil started coming out of the breathers, the driver lifted, generally way before an explosion
Clutches were an early item for safety cans/liners, etc
Fuel shutoffs,etc
The move to RED really didn't start when Garlits lost his foot, but when he started to consistently outrun everybody--Now with the stuff behind them the drivers had more spectacular mishaps----as long as the car was going forward the driver legged it----
With the funny cars, the engine is in FRONT of the driver , but they cann't see the oil as its plumbed into catch tanks---so BOOM, bodies flying, flames,etc
If they put the breather tube hose in the drivers face, there would be less explosions and fires

aint good at the normal "schoolin" got a diploma not worth the paper it was printed on schools like to just push you through these days. im not very good at math.

Make money doing what you like and what you are good at . Fixing and building cars . I have worked on Heavy trucks for more then 25 years . In a Union Shop . There not Hot Rods but it is what I am good at. And it pays the bills .
