9 or 8" REAR END
Hi there,
is it possible to fit a 9 inch positraction diff on an 8"casing?
Does anyone know how to tell appart a Ford 8"from an 9" without taking it apart?
See I bought a 66 Mustang and I was told it has a 9" rear end but I'm not quite sure how to tell them apart. I was told it replaced the stock 8".
Thanks !

9" center section won't fit in an 8" housing.
One quick way to tell the difference is the bottom nut on the carrier. On an 8" you can slip a long socket over it, but with the 9" the size of the pinion housing won't let you use the long socket.
The reinforment ribbing is different too, but I don't have any pictures right now to show the difference.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Sorry for your loss of friend Mike McGee, Shine. Great trans men are few and far between, it seems. Sadly, Mike Frade was only 66 and had been talking about retirement for ten years that I know...
