I have been given both answers on the backpressure question: Yes. You do need backpressure in your exhaust.
And, No. The less restriction the better.
So what’s the answer? Do you need backpressure or not? And why or why not.

You need some back pressure to prevent all of that fuel/air you just scavenged (sucked) into the cylinder from scavenging right on out.

You do need some but, too much will restrict hp but none, as 76GMC1500 said is not good.You don't know what you've got til it's gone
