My brother has a 352 with a broken lifter. His mechanic says the top and bottom end may need to come apart to be sure no pieces dropped. This isnt a daily driver and he is not wanting to spend big money on the labor right now with a complete tear down.
Would it be cheaper labor wise to swap a used engine in? If so what engines would mate up to the bell housing on his 66' F-100 C-6 tranny? I just thought it would be cheaper this way, am I wrong?

Anything such as a 351C or 351W should hook up. All depends. Why doesn't you buddy just tear the thing apart himself and look at it? Drop the pan and check there. Then if he finds something broke and can get a good deal on a 351C or so then get that. Should go right up to the C6 tranny with the right flywheel.
The FE engines have a unique bellhousing bolt pattern. Cleveland and Windsor engins will not bolt up to an FE bellhousing.
Dave is correct, seems like every engine family Ford built required it's own bellhousings to go with it.
WRENCHD's list is pretty complete, but he left out a few (generally hard to find/expensive ones) 332, 406 and 427. If you happen to come a cross a 428, which probably will not be a cheap alternative, some of them had a different exhaust manifold bolt pattern than the rest of the FEs.
hey guy's, yes you are right i left out a few engines but i didn't think that he wanted to go that way , it would have cost too much and he didn't want to spend. another thing that he could do is take off the intake and see what broke as you said, maybe something easy, ha ha.it never seems to go that way, at least not for me. good luck with it
I just mentioned they 'cause you never know what someone might run across.
I also agree, I'd do a little tearing down (he'll have to pull the engine anyway to swap it).
