68 307
I would like to start by saying that the amount of info here is incredible..
With that said, I have a 68 Chevelle with a 307 (purchased about 3 months ago), do not know much about it, feels tight, does not burn oil, 350th trans, 2bbl carb, appears to be completely stock. What can I do for more hp on a budget?
-
In my humble opinion you'll have to first unplug the 307 as they are not a motor to hotrod. Look for a 350.
-
Realistically, bottom line, Michael has provided the correct answer.
-
Thank you, that is in the plans, I am just looking for a little something extra right now. Is it best to just live with what I have until I build the new motor?
Thanks agian.

i just dont understand why people dog the 307's & 305's. yes it does cost more $$$$ to build them & almost noboby wants them. BUT they are just as reliable as any other SBC and they can be made to run fast IF ya know the correct combo. i did have a link from this site were some other member gave me advice about the 307 & how to hop it up, BUT it's been deleted, ooo well....joe

its up to you, dollar for dollar youll get more power from a 350, so if your looking for the most economical overall power, your better off with 350 or more, however, you can make really decent power with the 307.
-
people have a right to dog the 305 its junk if your looking for power then of course 350
the 307 has the shorter stroke so it revs high.its a smaller bored 327 im looking for one to try it out
-
of course people have the right. doesnt make em look smart, but who cares.

i'd say if you wanna juice it up buy a decent intake manifold, get a small 4bbl carb, you'll have to get used to not stomping it but easing on it to not drown the engine, upgrade your ignition with a pertronix unit... that'll make her run a little nicer.... and then when you get a 350, all those parts are interchangeable
-
The 307 is a much better engine than a 305. The 307 has the same bore as a 283 (3.875") and the stroke of a 327 (3.25"). Almost anything you can do to help the performance of a 327 or 350 will also work in a 307. Thesals is correct - buy the goodies you want and you can put them on a 350 later.

Thank you all for the advice, again, the info here is excellent.
