Falcon's engine is almost out

I almost got the engine out of the falcon. most everything came out clean, I broke 1 bolt off out of the thermostat housing, teacher wanted me to pull it out so a bolt could be inserted into it for pulling, needless to say, it snapped, left 90% of the bolt in the head, so welding on a nut should be no problem. other than that, all of the exhaust mainifold bolts are going to break, but that is a common problem with them, so I expected that. if I were pulling the motor at my house, I would have just pulled the valve cover and gotten long bolts for 2 of the head bolts, but to put the motor back in, this wouldn't work unless I put the head on after it's in the car, but I found 2 spots for pulling, the chain is real tight tho, I may pull the valve cover to gain some slack. I did forget to take the hood off, no big setback tho.

got the engine out today. ended up pulling the rocker shaft, then hooking on to the front and back rocker shaft bolt holes with grade 8 7/16 bolts, came out easy. took less than 5 minuites after hooking on to it with the hoist, so much space on each side, there was no obstacles to need to manuver around. so tuesday, I will start tear down.

I don't think there is. a 428 would fit in if I could find 1. I'm just going to rebuild and turbocharge the 200, should make about 200 HP with approx 350 ft/ lbs of torque. I'm also going to add TBI fuel injection, and run a megasquirt 2 fuel injection controller, which will also control the ignition, using the purple and orange wires from the Duraspark 2 distributor that I bought, and putting them in the right connectors

yeah those 200s are a nice and easy pull thats what my 66 mustang had in it before i did a full v8 conversion on it.... very pricey to do i'll tell you that.... theres all sorts of crap you would never even think of that you gotta change or weld or so forth.... are you going to continue to run the 7.5" rearend or change it????

I'm going to keep the 7.5" for now, but I will change to a 8" when I find 1 narrow enough.

Check out some of the early Mavericks, Matt... The 8" in them should be fairly close. Maybe a Granda or Monarch??? Or if you are really lucky, one of the 8.8's out of a Mustang????

actully Maverick/ Granada/ Monarch 8" are bolt in swaps, some later Monarchs had the 8.8" rear end which would be a bolt in swap also but, it's rare. there's gotta be a junkyard with 1 of them around, just got to find time to look.

Kewl, should be easy to upgrade then. Some of the Fox body Mustangs run in the 10's with the 8.8's, they are a really stout unit if you can locate one at a decent price.... Or, I have this 8.8 IRS out of a T-Bird, some assembly required!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

I put a 302 in a 68 falcon, it was easy as pie. All I did was to get a 68 galaxie with a 302, and had everything I needed for the swap! I also put in an automatic overdrive transmission. That was no extra trouble really, just got everything from the 'donor car' which i needed for the swap.

yeah the bronco rearends up to 74 are a close fit too... i believe they're an inch wider in total width which really wont cause any problems... maybe give you a little better foot on the road

well that would allow me to use a wheel with more backspacing for a wider tire

Well, I pulled the head off today, the head is in good shape, and the cylinder bores in the engine look great, there's very little wear and very little ridge, the pistions look good and they were all burning simmilar. My teacher asked me about adding performance yesterday, and I told him that I had a Turbo to put on it in the trunk and he wasn't very enthused by the idea, but said, we'll see, today after I got the head off, he was verifying that I wanted to " Zip It Up a bit " and I told him yes, and that I was going to use the Turbo, then he says I would need a new exhaust manifold or mod the existiong 1 ( which I knew ) and that it wouldn't be worth it, I tried to tell him that most of the Turbo 200's that I have seen use a "J" pipe coming off the manifold, but he cut me off saying that the exhaust manifold is very restrictive and that a set of headders would add performance, I have researched the 144-250's and there restricted in the intake due to the log head, and headders just sound cool, as the stock manifolds flow better than the intake anyway, the headders would do nothing, maby 20 or so HP if that. so he's planning on me spending $300 on a set of headders for the engine, because he says he knows I don't want to spend a lot of $$$ on the engine ( I never told him I was going on the cheap ). Tomorrow I'm going to tell him that ither I leave the exhaust alone and I'll hook up the stocker exhaust for now, then add the turbo when I get it home, or he lets me add the J pipe and put the turbo on in school. the whole 'needing' a rebuild was so the engine could saftly be turbocharged, the TBI EFI is just a ' Because I can ' Icing on the cake type thing.

sounds like hes one of those people that doesn't have innovation in mind and wants to just go with the old method thats been proven to at least work... i say tell him that you would rather be creative with your car than just be the same old #### that everyone else builds.... btw while you got the engine out.... pull the wiring harnesses and sand your engine bay down and slap a few coats of some high temp paint on there.... a clean engine bay just makes the engine look that much better

yep, I like him as a teacher, but when he compleatly shut me down on the turbo, I told him I had the turbo yesterday, and today he just shuts me down. He dosn't know I got the turbo for free, for all he knows I paid money for it, but regardless, still shut me down, unless he forgot I told him I had the turbo the day before, which he may have ( I hope he did ). I'm going to clean and paint the engine compartment flat black I think.

I did mention it, when I had just asked him about bringing it in, he said we'll see, he may have forgot about me telling him as I just briefly mentioned it, but I'm gonna have to remind him tomorrow.

teacher may take the EFI better. I can do that cheaply as we have tons of GM coolant temp sensors and intake air temp sensors, A'll I'd need is a throttle body and 36 # injectors, and a high preassure fuel pump and reg along with all the MSII controller hardware

with TBI its more than likely going to be fit for just a single injector unless you get it from a v8

the TBI I have my eye on is a 5.0L Ford V8 in a '88 Crown Vic, I only see 1 injector but there may be 2.

not yet, but if he still persists on having me do only headders, maby:LOL: really if he does not let me, I'll just reattach the stock exhaust and put the turbo on at home. it would be nice to run the new exhaust standing up under a lift, but I could do it on my back under the car, like I have in the past

no, I just won't buy them, there's only a few sources for them. www.classicinlines.com is the most well known, but only does online orders needing a credit card. there not exactly somthing that my teacher could order from Napa and put on the class account there. as for building the engine for the turbo, I'll just tell him I'll order the internal parts from my own sources ( IE Ross racing, Northern Auto Parts, Comp cams ect... )

If you are building the motor for a turbo,there should be no problem bolting the stock manifold on.Drive home and install the turbo and pipe.

Update: Talked to teacher today about the turbocharger, told him I had 1k to spend on it to start with. He's gonna let me do it. he just ran thru, lowering the compression, in which I told him that I was aiming for 8.3:1 and he said that was in the ball park of what is needed. then he told me we don't have the tooling to machine for hardened seats, so I will have to send the head out for that, just to Napa which is right down the road, and also that I may have to get stiffer valve springs, which I was thinking about. I think he was figuring on me spending 2-300 total for the rebuild and that's why he turned the turbo idea down originally. no wonder it was smoking, the umbrella valve seals that keep the oil out of the valve stem bore, a couple were non existant ( and in the bottom of the oil pan ) or cracked. bottom end looks good, other than the reminants of the valve seals in the oil pan.
