186 heads

well i did some diggin into what my engine had in it and well i found out that i have some double hump heads or fuelies, and i know that these are great race heads but i was wondering why they are called camel humps and why they are so sought after

Camel or double hump due to the marking on the end of the heads. #3927186 will be found in the rocker area if that is indeed what you have. Not sure of all the motors they came on but they were on the 69 302 Z28 motor and have 2.02" intake and 1'60" exhaust valve sizes.
Camel humps were actually on several different heads of which some had the 1.94"/1.50" valves but had different casting #'s.

In their day the were some good heads, as with most things the technology in the aftermarket has come up with many improved designs both in aluminum and cast iron. They still work ok, just no longer are the best heads to use.....

Well , if you got em, and they are in good condition. Use em. They didn't cost you anything. In thier day they were the top head for the racers to use, because there was nothing else. And they were also heavily ported. An unported set is a rare find.

Many old school guys really like the 186's more than the other double humps because they had the accessory holes in them(most other double humps do not). I mention this out of jealousy because I am running a set of (1965)heavily ported big valve 461 Feulies(nearly identical to your 186's) and now I am finding out the hard way what a pain in the butt it is to put a power steering pump in my car(she wants to drive it).
As far as performance potential goes don't expect them to run with a set of new CNC ported AFR heads, but they have more potential than most people give them credit for. (115mph in the 1/4 with a 3600lb car, no nitrous 383 on street tires full exhaust)
