I have a wobbling crank pulley, i noticed it after i drove to north carolina, i was checking the motor before i made the trip home. I tried tightening the bolts ,but they were tight. It made the return trip , but now im worried, i might have bent the crank stub. I talked to the guys at the cruise tonight , and someone suggested that the stock balancer is coming apart, but it looks fine to me, any thoughts? Its a sbc, all stock.
I believe I'd replace the dampner as someone suggested it's probably coming apart.
More then likely the balancer. My experience is they have just been replaced, or need to be replaced. I'd consider on of the aftermarket fluid dampners without the elastic ring. Not that spendy and no future problems with wobbly balancers.

You'll be a lot happier with one of them. I tried one about 5 years ago, now when I'm getting ready to start on an engine, I just throw the stock one in the junk trailer, and order a new one!
The pulley isn't on the balancer ring. Is the ring wobbling, or the pulley? The balancer can't cause a wobbly pulley.
if its the pulley that looks wobley then it probably isn't seated flush to the hub...... if its not the pulley that you're seeing the wobley get the fluid balancer, they are excellent
Its all of it, the pulley and the balancer, thats why i tried to crank down on the bolts, i figured that maybe the balancer bolt got loose running for so long, so i tried to tighten it ,but it was still tight, then i thought maybe it bent the crank stub a little.
Gotta ask...what has happened recently that would bend the crank snout? It is something that you don't typically bend with a 9/16" wrench or by overtightening the pulleys.....
Nothing that i know of.
The dampner will usually go bad long before the crank bends. Perchance are there hammer marks on it where someone beat it on with a hammer?

Well its fixed, it was the balancer, took it off today, and the outer ring had slipped forward about 1/4", got another one from an old motor, and no more wobbling, just thought i would update you guys on this, you guys were right.

I had this same problem - I found the keyway on the crank sheared out :mad:
Pretty certain it happened while doing a 120mph/high rpms and turning on the A/C - I wont try that again.
