Look above in post #28 in this thread, Don's (IToldYouSo) quote tells us he uses NGK plugs over all others, and that's what I use in my SBF, too, recommended by my engine builder. I believe they're head & shoulders above the old standard AC and Champion brands, which I believe are assembled in China now.Quote:

I use Wix oil filters, K&N air filters and Autolite plugs. As far as I'm concerned plug wires are as important as the plugs. I have Moroso wires on the Mustang and Taylor spiral cores on my 91 Dakota and I won't touch anything that has Accell stamped on it.
Like Ken, I have settled on Wix or NAPA Gold oil filters and K&N air filter. My NGK plugs are V-Power, but that does not mean they're better or worse than the others that NGK offers; and it doesn't make them better or worse than the Autolites Ken likes. They're just what I picked based on the advice of the guy who built my engine, and so far I can't complain. Some of the bowtie guys may have other ideas about what has worked for them.Quote:

Ok. I changed out the fuel filter. I have a clear Mr. Gasket on there now. There is some black specs that I can see in the filter. There was also kind of a black oil spot inside the carb. Also when I turned it off I saw something strange. Fumes of some sort comming from a hole that is just in front of the advance. The engine also has a bad idle, and now takes a little effort to start it. It seems to be burning rich to. Al
I took some pictures of that whatever it is.. I fired up the car, and put my finger on it, and it does suck on my finger.
I would almost have to say that you do have a carb issue. My car is in storage for the next few days . I'll look at mine soon, but hopefully someone will come up with a solution. Take those little clips off of the levers on the outside. Unhook the lines, pull the screws and the top will come right off. There will be two long needles, so pull it straight up and take a look to see if you have crud in there. I'm curious about that side of the carb where the air is sucking in. I'll look at my book. Nothing should pop out. It's really pretty easy to do.
I'm wondering if this carb was setup with a vaccum choke. It's not showing that corner in my book. I'm thinking it should be plugged.
Did you say it was ok when you put the carb on?
Vacuum secondaires. I really never saw that happen before.. A friend told me that because I have some rubber lines in the system there may have been a plug, but because I have a filter inline there probably isn't anything in there. I fired it up and brought it up to operating temp. The miss seemed to be better. Then I turned it off, and had a bugger of a time to re start it.
I'm looking at your picture thinking that this car must have a clutch. The two vaccum ports on front. One is plugged. The other one is probably hooked up to the distributor. I think I'll go over and look at mine tomorrow and see how I set mine up. It's only blocks away. I have a 1406 carb with an automatic. My other port runs to my trany. I gotta see which is which on mine because the two ports have different uses. What is that other number next to the 1406? If what I'm thinking is correct, this might have been a carb setup for a vaccum choke and I'm wondering if the setup on this choke might have something to do with the hard starting. I don't know. I'm justa thinking. Hope you get it figured out. It's always nice to that happen on this site.
Also with this type of issue, you just might have a fouled plug being that it has been running rich. While it's running pull a spark plug wire off one at a time. Either off the cap or the spark plug. There should be a noticeable difference as long as it's not to high of an idle. If one doesn't change the sound of the motor, then that one is probably fouled out. And check the gap. Good luck.
Nope. Automatic. I put a T in and the transmission vacuum is taken off the intake. As with the power brakes.I'll just pull the plugs and check them out.Quote:

Well when I put my finger over it. It just pulls it in, but nothing really changes. After I turn it off. There is some vapor in there, but nothing else. As far as the greasy spot goes. I wiped it off, and nothing else showed up there. As far as the specs in the filter.. They are about 1/3rd the size of a grain of salt.
