engine misses

HI EVERYONE:

I had to remove my head to fix some valves in my 350 chevy. The shop said the engine had sucked the valves up into the head. I don't know what that means. I put everything back together. The engine runs fine a idle but sounds funny at about 1500 rpms and will run no more than about 3000 rpms. By the way it's in a boat. I have adjusted the valves 2 times no difference. The 1 thing I queston about my job is could I have installed the distributor 180 deg off? Would it run? I thought I had marked the rotor position but couldn't find the mark! Used my best quest from what I remembered. Any help please. I like to figure out things on my own but this has me stooped!

Where is all my help??

Your car would not start if you had the distributor in 180 degrees off. I did that once and all i got was a hell of a backfire!! If you wanna make sure its not the distributor, make sure cylinder #1 is at top dead center and line up the rotor at the #1 post on the cap. Then go from there, it should start up and then just adjust the timing.

the only way i ever cranked a motor that was 180 degrees off was when i was able to turn the dist 180 degrees around without taking it out of the block. :HMMM: :LOL: if its 180 degrees off and run as good as he says im leaving town. :CRY: :LOL:

It makes really neat flames, and popping sounds when it is 180* out.
doesn't take long to figuire that one out though. It is how the engine wants to just stop when cranking.
Even if the distributor is 180* out, or 90, or 270, the wires can be moved on the cap.
It sounds like a distributor issue, unless it is vaccum, or fuel, or all of the above.
Having been a boatman for many years, it sounds like varnish has formed in the bowl. When this happens, flakes will float and at certain rpms, the flow will plug jets.
If I were Idameron, I would verify the firing order, locate #1, verify the timing, then take the carb apart and clean out the bowl, jets, and passages.
The old fuel used to go sour, and make a mess. The new fuel really evaporates faster, and leaves a grainey residue behind. This combined with the small varnish build up, produces flakes. In boats, this is a real issue.
I had an engine on my boat. It would idle like a bear, as soon as I opened it up, it ran on two less cylinders! I checked points, coils, timing, fuel filter, it went on, and on. As soon as I cleaned the carb. The problem went away. That was all it took. Really only cleaning the bowl and the lower jets.

Im a little confused here...i mean you come on here without even saying hi or nothing, no hi my name is so and so or anything like that just hey fix my shit. dude check this out, thats not how it works around here, you know? its like walking into a shop and grabbing one of the techs tools and saying im gonna use this to fix my car and rolling up on the lift like you own the joint.....wow people these days im telling ya...

Let me start over. I didn't mean to ruffel some of your tail feathers.

My name is Leonard.
I need some help with my boat engine.

To answer some of your questions:

Yes I used a timing light set it at 10.

The first time I set the valves I used the thumb in the hole. When it was at the top I set the exhaust & the intake lash & then 1/2 turn. I realize now I may not have been tdc on each cylinder.
The second time I watched the exhaust when it begins to open I adjusted the intake & when the intake is almost closed I adjusted the exhaust.
Both gave me the same results.
I have in the past in my cars adjusted while running but in my boat I don't want all the mess.

The distributor is Mallory no vacumn advance.
Also, I switched the carbs.
New plugs,wires,points,rotor& cap.
The shop did try to explain what is meant by sucking the valves up in the head but by me not being a mechanic I didn't understand.

The engine runs good at idle, you can hear like a popping out of the exhaust at 1500 rpm's, runs fairly good at 2500, tops out at around 3000.

I had the head at the machine shop for the problem of sucking the valves up into the head and they didn't say anything about any other problem. It's a stock cam.
This is a new engine with only about 50 hrs.
I only did 1 head. I hope I don't have a problem with other side. Could it be the valves are not adjusted correct?

The engine was put in 2 years back. It's not vortek. The boat is an 85. The reason I only did 1 head was because I found low, all most no compression on 1 and the next cylinder was week also.

It was clearly these two cylinders that were missing and had low compression. I talked to the shop that did my work and he said he had seen a lot of chevy engines with this same problem and left it up to me as to pulling the other head. He has done it both ways. I hope I didn't make a bad decision.

I'm assuming that your Mallory is a dualpoint, if so along with your other problems, you could have point gap problems. I'm not real fond of Mallory's point plate, I switched the one in my '66 Mustang over to Petronix.

A fuel filter will cause that engine backfire noise. Also a loose brass fiting in the card. John

engine missing as before I fixed it last year

I guess I screwed up by not doing both heads. I got a question for any of you guys out there that would be so kind to help. If I fixed the head/cylinder with the tuliped valve, could this happen to the same head, different cylinder. I guess next weekend I will try and figure out what cylinders are not firing.
