converting from holley to edelbrock

hi,
ive been the one having problems with getting fuel in my oil pan, and so my next step is im going to try a new carb. I have a carter laying around, dont know the cfm, but im going to try and see if it makes a differance before spending the money on a new carb.
The holley i have right now is a 4150hp and i have aluminum fuel lines that lead up to the regulator, and from the regulator on, its all size 8 AN fittings.

My question is since the carter only has one fuel inlet, and its not made to fit with and AN fitting, How can i reconfigure my fuel line that i have to make it work? I know this probly sounds stupid but Im new to all this so its hard for my to know what would work best

How do you know fuel is in your oil,is it a lot or a little?What engine do you have whats the fuel set up?

after about 10 miles of driving it you can start to smell it in the oil and you can see it gets a little thinner. I have a chevy 454 and a 280gph electric fuel pump, And running about 5 psi of fuel.

Also, I just saw that you can take off the inlet to the edelbrock which i didnt see before, So now i just need to confirm that it is a size 6AN fitting?

Earl's makes a fitting that adapts the Carter/Edelbrock carbs to #6 AN.

Difficult to see in the photo, but it's there.

The inlet on the fuel log is a #8 AN.

Earl's also makes reducers and unions to go from #8 to #6 and vice-versa.

you have the old holley design with the removable top . right ? those carbs had an internal problem and constantly blew powervalves. they quit making them . i had 5 or six go bad. just ran super fat all the time. i replaced them with the 1850s holley. no problems since.

Here's a slightly different view.

The adapter like most of the Earls fittings is anodized blue.

The fitting screws into the large threads of the carb.

The idirited brass colored fitting that comes stock on the Carter/Edelbrocks is an SAE 45 degree female fitting on the fuel hose/tube side.

Why would you do that ?The Holley is much easier to tune.

i found nothing to help. i replaced powervalves and still had problems. i have 3 in a box still. just a bad design i guess. never really figured it out and holley was mum about it. no help there.

Well that sux, Ive been dealing with this problem for like 6 months and have tried everything. I guess ill just get rid of it asap.
I dont know what carb i want for sure. The main reason right now i was going to change to a carter was to see if i could isolate the problem for one, and two, not spend 400 bux to do it.

not trying to be a smartass, but what makes you think that its the carb? From my experiance that type of problem usually is a fuel pressure problem. I have never run a fuel pump, but can an improper functioning fuel cap, which isn't letting gas tank pressure to bleed out, push fuel past the fuel pump? Is the return line still properly hooked up if needed? To what I know with the power valve issue the only time I have blown one is when the motor has backfired and that has never to my knowledge let fuel to keep flowing down the cylinders.

Have you checked your Holley's float levels?

Some Holley's - especially the Pinto Holley 2 bbl - have nitrocellulouse floats.
With today's gasoline they tend to deteriorate and sink which raises fuel bowl levels to an unacceptable point.

Fire the engine, the excess fuel washes down the cylinder walls and some of it finds it's way into the pan.

Another point of fuel ingress is a mechanical fuel pump with a ruptured diaphragm that still pumps gas, but leaks some into the pan.

Far as which carb - Holley or Carter/Edelbrock - is easier to tune, I think it has to do with which one you're most familiar with.

I do ok with Holley's, but seem to do a little better with Carter/Edelbrocks.

Either brand is simple as long as you keep to the basics and have a carb that's close to the factory baseline.

hey no problem, your not being a smartass. Ill take as much info as possible. Well when i had this at sea level with a bigger carb, the thing didnt have a problem at all. Now im at 4000 ft level and have had this problem. Then i switched down to a 750 which is what i have on now, and same problem.
The carb i have on right now though i think is more for racing too. Not sure if thats the full reason or not. Its a holley 4150 hp 80528-1
I do know i have a return line, and i do belive its hooked up correctly. I dont have a mechanical pump on there at all, so it cant be the diaphram. Also, the float levels are perfect right now. Another thing i was wondering is, can a fuel pump be too powerful?

They can be, but you said you had 5 lbs. of pressure, so its not what the pump will do, but what you actually have at the carb.

Do you think this carb would be a good one? I use it all for street, but the one i have on right now is just like this but is for racing and is mechanical secondairies.

How old is that carb? You can't have a 30 carb,and expect for it to run fine with a simple rebuild.I have also dealt with holley ,and it is hard to get any kind of answer.Holley is not even owned by Holley,I think edelbrock owns it just like a lot of other big names.Holley is still a excellent carb though.:whacked:

The last I knew Holley,NOS,Weiand,Lunati where the same company Holley performance brands.

I knew it was something like that:D

I think, not positive but i think its from the early 90's. Looks a lot older but i think the guy that i got it from bought it from a machine shop in the early 90's, so im assuming that it was brand new.

Sounds like you are getting some serious ring wash. Could be a number of problems. Carb could be way to rich, or it could be bleeding down, or you not pulling enough vacuum to keep the power valve shut, or your needle and seats or bad, or your tuning could be way off due to altitude. That double pumper isn't good either for street use.

Really need more info to help diagnose the problem.
What are the engine's specs and it's size?
What is it in?
Are your plugs fouling?
Does the engine flood real easy?
What size jets and squirters do you have in the carb?
What does the engine run like?
What type tranny?
What stall speed?
What rear gear?

List all specs on engine such as cam, heads, intake, ignition, and cubic inches.

Ok.
Its a 454 with 10:1 compression, 292 dur cam with 590 lift. Edelbrock 6055 rpm performer heads. Super victor manifold, Msd and msd ignition system.
The carb has 31 size squirters, and the engine seems to run good except when idleing. I dont see black smoke, and the engine reponds good. The engine will warm up and it will idle at about 1100 rpms which is where i want it, and then after driving the idle will go up to about 1400 rpms. The plugs are black, but they dont seem to be affecting anything, but they are pure black within 10 miles.

The tranny is a th400 with a 2800 stall and 456 gears.
I have low engine vacuum witch is only at 5hg in gear and 8hg in park. I tried down to a 2.5 power valve and still had the same problem.

If i left any thing out let me know.

do you guys think i should try a differant carb first? Or maybe do a leak down tester on the engine? I dont have the equitment for the leakdown test, but i just dont want to go in circles with another carb as i did with this one.

i would try to borrow another carb to try. once you get a lean tune on it it's going to take some hwy miles to reseat your rings.

sounds like you've blown your power valve in your carb- Holley I think you said- is famous for this, and is an easy fix.
I agree with shine also, after you do fix the carb it will take some running to get the carbon out of it.
Also your running a pretty high lift cam for a 10:1 CR, and I use rule of thumb ( cid x top rpm devided by 3456 = carb. cfm ) for a starter carb size.
your vac. is a little low, check for leaks & check your timing.
I had the same trouble with a Crane 292- I set the timing it would backfire & blow the power valve, not enough compression at 10 1/2:1 for the fuel to support the lift. Stepped down a step on the cam, went to a smaller carb & increased my performance a LOT!! Went from a bogger to a tire fryer.
Now it would run with the 292 if I retarded it to the stone age- but it left me with very low vac. & tended to run hot & performance was poor, because of the timing placement. Where if I had of run a higher compression build I could have run the higher lift & lopey cams, but I didn't & I didn't want to spend the money again on the same engine build for an everyday driver.

ya, i get what your saying. I am a rookie to all of this so i am learning myself. The engine to me seems to rocket, but then again this is my first hot rod and have only had this cam in it.
I have checked for all the leaks and still havent found anything, so i dont think its that, but i do think it has to do with the cam. I havent had the thing back fire on me once, so thats a good thing.

also, ive been through like 3 differant power valves while adjusting and still go the same result, so im trying to eliminate that as a problem.
