Im going to build up a 460 to put into my 77 lincoln mark v. I want it to be a powerful as I can get it but im going to be using it for street as a weekend car. I have rebuilt engines before but they were stock factory crap for newer cars. any help on what I should do. should I make it a stroker or leave it what kind of internals/heads stuff like that. Ive been researching for a little bit but still want some opions. any help would be appreciated
A car as big and heavy as a Mark needs a lot of torque to get it moving, the 501 stroker kit would definitely be the answer. You're also going to need some headwork, or a set of aluminun head would really help if they were in the budget.
yeah im going to put new heads on. not sure about aluminum because of the price. But im pretty much planning on starting with a bare block and building it up
I had a set of the Edelbrock RPM heads on a 501 in a car that I sold. They are expensive, but I believe it was the best money I spent on the build. Out of the box they worked great, next set I would like to get some port and flow work done and realize a bit more of their performance potential. As good as they worked, doubt I would ever go back to cast iron. With the price of parts, flow bench time, and porting work on the cast iron not sure I really would have saved that much using cast iron. The weight savings is considerable, also. The BBF's are such torque monsters anyway, I just bought the stroker kit, balanced the bottom end, bolted on the heads and intake, and used an MSD "plug and play" distributor. I have myself convinced the expense is justified. !!!!!!
how much hp/torque you running on your engine?
Never did dyno that engine, I would imagine it was in the 400 hp range, probably around 430 torque. With the Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads on a 501 stroker with a Dominator carb, friend of mine has 500 hp, 570 torque. Runs 10.90's in the car. Has some bugs to work out of it yet, when it's tuned right, should go 10.50's
yeah thats about what im looking for. Somewhere around 500-600 because it is a heavy car
What we've found on the BBF engines is to forget the HP numbers and concentrate on getting the torque to come in early, build to a huge number and shift before 6000 RPM. They will rev a lot higher, but with the torque numbers you can get it at low RPM, why bother??? Torque is what moves the heavy sleds, anyhow.
so anyway what would be the best heads for street performance?
For the street, the Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads do just fine when used with the matching intake and cam kit. They will build some very nice torque.
500HP 501 using ported iron heads is simple. 600HP with the same heads is very doable. 600HP with aluminum heads is easy, and the Edelbrocks are good. At this time, I would opt for the TFS 429/460 head ("TFS Street/Strip") for a 600HP 501 that would use aluminum heads.
You need to figure out exactly what you want and how much you can afford to get there. Once that is squared away, I would be happy to offer some pointers.

Why don't you look into a Ford Racing (I think it's that or Roush one of the two) 514 motors? They come with 625 HP. That would get that big vehicle on the move! Around 7 grand for one if I remember correctly.... Probably cheaper than building one from scratch by yourself and all the hard work is done for you.... Crate motors seem to be the way to go these days unless you can get parts for cheap and get REALLY good deals.

Actually, for the 625HP 514, try list price $7595. Plus shipping, or plus tax (and maybe freight) from a local dealer that has one in stock.Quote:

I can build 625HP for a couple thousand less, shipped to your door. Or hell, send me the whole $7600+ dollars and I'll build you a higher horsepower engine.
Ford crate motors are nice but expensive, and don't have everything inside of them that one can put into their own hand built motor for less money.

Crap, I went against my signature!!! :D Yeah well the crate motors are a good price. A lot of people I talk to say the crate is the easiest and cheapest way to go.... Oh well, maybe I am wrong, but either way he is asking a lot for something out of just a 460....
Crate motor is an alternative and certainly has a right to be available. I suppose it's a good choice for some people.
By the way, FMX, your truck kicks ass.
